Hello all, I'm having an oddity with my Windows XP Pro install. As I could not install WinXP from my DVD drive (my Pioneer DVD-103S was not being displayed as a bootable device on my Intel D845WN mobo), I burnt some setup disks and installed XP from those, inserting the CD when prompted for the rest of the files. After Win XP was installed, I rebooted, no problems. Apart from I don't have a DVD rom any more, you know, the DVD rom I installed Windows XP from? It's a bit odd... I can make the DVD drive appear if I attach it to the primary IDE controller as a slave, but then XP enters a boot - reboot cycle [emote|:(] Should my dvd rom drive be recognised by the BIOS? I have a feeling I'm using an ATA cable on it instead of a IDE cable, but the device was working fine under Windows 2000 with that. It was also working fine as I installed Windows XP from it, it just disappears in Windows proper... Any thoughts? My mobo firmware is up to date, and I believe my DVD is as well. I just don't get why it doesn't appear in BIOS... Thanks, Mike K.

Yes - the drive should show up in the BIOS. Try using the correct cable first to see if that corrects the problem. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100
H'ok, i'll try that tonight - thanks for the speedy reply [emote|:-)] Just curious, why would the drive work with an ATA cable? Thanks again, Mike K.
Originally Posted by ragulrocks_82: was it a serial ata or was it a parallel ata
I'm going with parallel ATA, as I bought the device YEARS ago [emote|;)] It is possible that the cables I have are SATA, but I still don't get it [emote|:(] The drive was working fine under Windows 2000, but never showed up in BIOS either - I had to install from diskette for that, too. I wasn't able to get a plain IDE cable, will try to purloin one tomorrow... Ta all, Mike K.

As a side note, I've got a Compaq CD rom drive, manufactured in 2000. It is on the ATA cable on the secondary IDE channel as a master, and it's recognised by the BIOS. When I connect my DVD-103S to the cable that worked for the CD Rom, the DVD-103S is *not* recognised by the BIOS. I can't even update the firmware on the CD rom as the firmware update app can't see the drive - grrr.

The cable being used is a standard Ultra ATA cable, with the blue, black and grey connector blocks....

By chance, is the new drive set as "master" or "slave". It should be set as master if there are no other CD/DVD drives connected. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows XP Professional, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100
The drive is set as master on the secondary ide channel - never appeared in BIOS, and I don't think it ever h@ss The BIOS is as up to date as it can be, and a CD-Rom drive I obtained yesterday shows in BIOS.

Ok, I've removed the dvd drive for the moment, but intend to put it back in as a slave off the CD, which appears in WinXP. It also has the happy effect of making my Secondary IDE Channel appear in Device Manager, and I've set the slave to PIO mode in anticipation. Ta for all your help, Mike K.
