Hi
Can anyone help me!, when trying to set up a broadband connection to a netgear modem/router using the instal disc i got from AOL I get most of the way through the first section until the checking of the modem/router. I get the message there was a problem connecting to the router, I have changed the ethernet cable and disabled the port and and the adaptor, still no joy, when I use the cmd prompt I get media.....disconnected. I spoke with AOL tech support and the have said that the network adapter is broken and I need a new one, however when I test it it comes back fine!
Any help would be gratefully received!!

First, who is your ISP? Can you connect to the internet through the router without AOL? i.e. through Internet Explorer or an e-mail client?
If you can, then there is a setup problem related to AOL (which would not be surprising). i.e. it's not your router.

Hi Thanks for your response,
AOL is my ISP, I cannot connect to IE nor an e-mail client through the router, AOL isn't even installed on the laptop as this is done after all checks are complete via the disc. The router is working fine. I am trying to use it for wireless setup however I cannot do this is this is in the second stage of the disc setup!

Do you have another computer connected to the router? If so, does it work? Also, what type of connection do you have (i.e. DSL, Broadband...)

Hi again, sorry I haven't replied for so long, I've been working too hard!, I do not have another computer connected to the router, the package that AOL sent out was their silver package which contained the netgear dg834g router, this is the broadband connection, I am still having the same problems, if you can help that would be great as I am getting it in the neck from my mum as it's her computer and she's driving me mad!
Thanks again

First, try byp@ssing the router and connect your computer direct to the broadband. See if AOL works that way. Advise accordingly.

Thanks for getting back to me, can you tell me how to do this? AOL software isn't installed yet as this is done through the disc set up which is a stage I can't get to until the laptop talks to the router.

Unplug your broadband modem from the router and plug it directly into your computer. Then try and install the software and see if that works.

Hi JM,
thanks for getting back to me,I don't have a broadband modem plugged into the router, I have an ethernet cable plugged directly into port 1 on the modem/router from my laptop as directed by the instructions on the install disc.

I connect the modem/router up to an ADSL filter that w@ssupplied by AOL, this plugs directly into the master phone socket. I have tried changing the filter, just incase it was that, this connects via the modem/router with a grey cable

Most people, at least here in the US, get access to the internet either through their phone company (example: Verizon) or through their TV cable provider (example: Time Warner).
Don't know who/what is available in Scottland, but you need to have access set up. I'd suggest checking with your phone company first.

Hi,
Again thanks for replying, access is gained through British telecom, however they have definately enabled the line for AOL, this has been checked, the problem really is that I just can't get the laptop to talk to the router.

Hi, I've been fixing AOL problems all week. But you are in luck as if you go to the Netgear site they have specific instructions for connecting to AOL[emote|:-)]
The set up is completely different from "normnal" ISP's as you have to also set up a new AOL screen name. Part of the process requires you to add a new location (under Screen Name Options).
