My friend has recently run into a problem with their laptop. They were finding their computer to be a little slow, so left it to defrag overnight. It onlt reached about 60% when they woke up the next day and so they stoppped it and went on for the day doing whatever. Later that day they were scanning for viruses or something when they suddenly had to reboot because the computer locked up. The computer wouldn't reboot, so they took the battery out to turn it off. After turning it back on later they couldn't load windows. A blue screen appears that says something like: Stop: c0000221 Unknown Hard Error \ System root \ System32 \ ntdll.dll We can't even boot into safe mode, same error occurs. Can't load a previous working copy either, it just resets after trying to load windows. Tried using the recovery console, after typing '1' to select the copy of windows to use (the only option) the computer just stops (or seems to). They don't want to lose the information on their computer. What can be done to fix this? Thanks.

Sounds like the hard disc crashed. YOu'll need to send it to the mfgr (depending upon how old it is) or to a reputable shop. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100

[/QUOTE] Oh please don't say that; that's really not good right now. They said it's happened before and someone was able to fix it for them, but they can't remember what they did.

A quick Google brought me to a number of articles in Microsoft's support site. Per the link below, it can be anything from bad/damaged hardware to a missing file. http://support.microsoft.com/search/default.aspx?catalog=LCID%3D1033&1033comm=1&spid=1173&query=Stop%3A+c0000221+&pwt=false&title=false&kt=ALL&mdt=0&res=20&ast=1&ast=2&ast=3&ast=4&ast=7&ast=10&ast=12&mode=a&adv=1 Best recommendation I can make - do a complete reformat/reinstallation of WinXP. If the problem persists, and you haven't installed any pirated or unknown software, then it's a hardware issue. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 1800 - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, nVidia 5200; SB Live Value; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS2, Nikon D200 and D100
