This is caused by tsr's or 3rd party programs like antivirus. It usually happens on winme.

You sure this is a clean install? I havent seen any repro of this without 3rd party software causing it.

ok

The nice thing about win98 setup over win95 setup, is in win98 the file copy phase happens first, so if you have problems on hardware detection you can go into safe mode and do things such as msconfig clean boot. In win95 setup the hardware detection was done first, and left you with little options. So once it crashes on hardware detection, go into safe mode and clean boot or disable devices in device manager.

Second, you could make a flat. One of the nice improvements in winme setup, is it first copies the cd to c:\windows\options\install, and runs setup from there. This makes setup faster, and reduces a lot of problems during setup. Win98 didnt have this feature because back then hard drive space was scarce.

To make a flat just run smartdrv from the win98 folder on the win98 cd. Then extract xcopy to the c drive

extract /a %cdrom%\win98\win98_22.cab xcopy*.* /L c:

change %cdrom% with your drive letter for cdrom

Then type c:\xcopy32 %cdrom%:\win98\*.* c:\win98

You will be prompted if it's a directory or file, select D

THere's also a win98 utility to speed this up if you like

On the win98 floppy just run ext.exe and follow the prompts.

Lastly, if you're getting errors in module unknown, i wonder if you have a virus like the matrix. There are versions of the matrix virus that are bios resident, and it usually causes errors in module unknown. Have you ever had a virus on this pc?

That would make sense if youve had the matrix on your LAN.

from the c drive type:

dir /a /s mtx_.exe

If it finds anything your gonna need to flash the bios.

I'm also leaning towards bad ram
