My mother's windows 98 computer freezes on startup at the screen with the Microsoft logo. I can open the computer in safe mode. None of the general things (recommended by others) have worked so far: - scanreg.exe /fix elicited: Registry Repair Results: windows found an error in your system files and was unable to fix the problem. Try deleting some files to free up disk space on your Windows drive. If that doesn't work then you will need to install Windows to a new directory. -79%complete- - I ran disc clean up and deleted the list offered and scanreg.exe /fix still doesn't work. - scanreg.exe /restore is useless because all configurations offered are after the problem. - My mother managed to misplace/lose Microsoft Windows 98 installation disc so System File Checker is temporarily useless. Does anyone know where I can get a copy?? I am currently attempting to run ScanDisc right now but it keeps on restarting... Does anyone have any advice?? PLEASE HELP!! By the way, I'm not allowed to reformat/reinstall windows because my mother is extremely paranoid... [emote|:s]urrender:

I had that problem many years ago with one of my 98 installs. It may be the hardware, try disconnecting every perif from the machine, printers, camer@sspeakers, etc. until its just the tower and monitor. It solved my prob, hope that helps.
