I have set-up the following network structure: * Means these system are not on often, and are used only 1 or 2 times a week. All computers are using WinXP – SP2 Network settings are currently set for automatic DHCP and DNS. All computers have Windows Firewall set –ON All computers are running AVG antivirus. None of the computer are on a domain. The IP of the router has been changed from the default and protected with a password. The Printers are HP with HP JetDirect 600n with set IP address. The Network is running well, and has been stable for several months now. Now it is time to do 2 projects: 1) File Servers 2) Tighten up security. I am going to work on the File Server first. For the file server, we have a nice Intel Duo core system with 2 IDE 120GB drives – which I would like to run in RAID 1. – 120GB will be more than enough for our use. I am thinking about installing WinXP as the OS, and sticking it on our main switch. Is this the best place for it? Next, I understand that I could put on a server OS on it like NASLite – but I am not familiar with it. Would it be better then WinXP? More secure? Now, once I get it so that all the computers can access the share folder on the server, I want to make it so that one or two people can access that folder via the Internet from another location – without compromising security. What would be the best and most secure way to do that?

First, nice setup. Given the extent of what you have, I'd look at two solutions. First would be Windows Small Business Server. Besides handling client authentication, it can also act as a print and file server. An alternate would be to use Server 2003 (or wait for Server 2008) and set up a DC (domain controller) and a separate file and print server. An alternate to the above could be something like Windows Home Server, due out later this year. My suggestion would be to look at either Small Business Server. It includes Sharepoint Services which would allow access via the internet, would help address many of the security issues and be more than adequate with the system you're looking at. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf Gateway Performance 700C - P4 1.8gz, 1gig RAM, ATi Radeon 9550; SB Audigy SE; Windows Vista Business, Photoshop CS3, Nikon D200
