I have a known working XP Pro CD that I am trying to install on my laptop with a brand new hard drive. No other OS has ever been on it. After a bit of difficulty getting the format to go through, it did finally start to fuction like a normal install.
Now it's at the screen where is is requesting files from the CD and the I386 is shown and I hit 'enter'. The CD fuctions as expected whirring as if files/drivers etc are being copied. It has repeated this at least a dozen or more times and it seems to be taking FOREVER! Not the "approximatly 29 minutes" on the screen.
The last time I installed this CD it seemed like it took awhile but that was on an already working PC. Is it because it is a new install and not a reinstall?
Thanks[emote|(D)]

My first thought is that you need to install an IDE driver when the WinXP install process first starts. i.e. at the bottom of the installl screen, there's a memo that says something similar to Press F5 to install driver. Check the laptop manufacturer's website for this. It'll be under driver support for your specific laptop.
The second thought is that you may have purchased the incorrect type of drive. Some of the newer laptops use a SATA, where others use IDE. Again, check the laptop manufacturer's website for this info also.
