When using my Desktop, which uses WindowsXP Home Edition, earlier today my icons and startup or task bar disappeared and are no longer visable. The computer is fully functional and has been scanned (viruses, spyware, etc), but its coming up clean. I tried restarting in safe mode, but the outcome is the same. Upon start up only my background is visiable. I can use the task manager to bring up my programs and even browse online, but I cannot get my icons or bar to show up. How can I fix this problem? I've tried NEW TASK typing in EXPLORER or EXPLORER.EXE, but it keeps displaying the same message "WINDOWS CANNOT ACCESS THE SPECIFIED DEVICE, PATH, OR FILE. YOU MAY NOT HAVE THE APPROPRIATE PERMISSIONS TO ACCESS THE ITEM." There are no permission settings or access restrictions because mine is the only user account on this computer. Do you suppose that it could perhaps work under the administrative user in safemode? Please help me i'm totally lost!
