Hi there,
I've been searching and trying to find some help with my networking problems..I'm getting crazy.
Problem:
I recently bought a Linksys WRTG54S router and connected my Vista PC and XP PC directly to it. There is a printer attached to the XP PC. I want to set up a network so I can access/print the xp files from my vista pc. This is what I have done so far:
created same account/pw on both pc's
created the same workgroup on both.
made the network I created ont he vista pc (REED) private.
set all sharing and discovery options to ON.
turned off all firewalls on both pc's
DL'd LLTD for the XP pc.
ran the network wizard on the xp pc.
----------------------------------------------
now, on my Vista pc..when I do a IPCONFIG, this is what shows up:
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : wildblue.com
Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::4872:a3f1:1840:2430%10
IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.100
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
on my XP pc, IPCONFIG shows this:
Windows IP Configuration
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : wildblue.com
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.102
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
----------------------------------------------------------
** question:why is the vista pc ip address end with 100 and the XP pc end with 102?
I am pretty new to all of this..can someone help me understand what needs to happen for me to be able to connect both of these pc's through the router?
Many Thanks!

The IP address is different as each computer must have it's own separate address. i.e. you can't have two computers with the same IP address as it'll create a conflict so that neither will be able to access the network.
First question - does either computer have any problems accessing the internet? If so, we'll need to deal with that. If not, move on to the second question - which antivirus or internet security suite are you using? [this is important as I've found that some of the latest internet security suites have hidden firewall settings that will prevent file/printer sharing]. Finally, are any of these wireless? That's important to know as you'll need to set up wireless security.
Once you advise on the above, we can provide a better explanation of what to do.

Hi,
I can access the internet on both pc's. The only thing I have running on both is Spyware Terminator. The XP used to have Norton on it, but I got rid of that. I guess I should look around spyware terminator for firewall settings. I may even delete S.T. on both machines just to see if that is the case. I can always reinstall it. Oh, I can see the XP pc on Vista's Network Map. When I try to access the XP pc, I get a message: Windows Cannot Access \\R2D2...... Check the spelling, etc, etc. the error code is 0x80070035. The network path was not found.
Another question: in Vista my network name is REED NETWORK. The xp pc doesnt have a network location listed in the Network Window under Computer. When I highlight the Vista PC it says Network Location: Reed Network.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh...These two pc's are are wired into the router. I did have the XP on a wireless adapter, and I could access it with the Vista PC, and print and all that. But now that I cabled the xp pc directly into the router, I cant access the xp pc at all...hence my frustration.

First, to address your lack of antivirus. Bad...very bad...[emote|:-|] Not smart. As to recommendations, take a look at Kaspersky Antivirus 2010 or better yet, their Internet Security Suite 2010. Both are a huge improvement over Norton (heck...anything's better than Norton - personal opinion), and are even better than the 2009 version of Kaspersky. The one thing to note on Kaspersky Internet Security Suite - it has its own firewall that automatically sets itself to "Public" - i.e. makes it so that your computer can't be "seen" by anyone else. You'll have to go into it Settings and change the firewall to private.
Now, as to getting botyh the Vista and XP computers to "talk" to each other, on the Vista computer, go under Network and Sharing Center, and make sure that it's set to "private network". Also, make sure that file and print sharing is turned on, and that password required for file/print sharing is set to "no". Also, make sure that both computers show "REED NETWORK" as the workgroup (it sounds like you have this set correct, but it doesn't hurt to double-check).
To share a folder on either the Vista or XP machine, right click and choose...sharing. Follow the on-screen prompts to share it. Same applies to printers. Hope this helps.

I had already named the workgroup on both pc's to MSHOME and already had the network set to private, network discovery on,file sharing on,public folder sharing on, printer sharing on and password protect off. In my Network and Sharing window, it has:
WOPR(my vista pc name)----------Reed Network----------Internet
And what I don't understand is the XP pc, R2D2, is on the Network Map.
WOPR-----|____________switch_______gateway_________internet
R2D2-----|
I just can't connect to the xp box for some reason
Thanks for the recommendation for Kaspersky Antivirus 2010 ,I'm going to order that

When you say you can't connedt to the XP box, did you enable file sharing on specific folders, as noted above?

I have a friend running xp pc and vista laptop, I can see both computers at the mapping stage but cannot file share. He is running norton's 360 and wondered if this would cause a problem?

File/folder sharing needs to be enabled on each computer.
