Wrong meandrake. A format only erases the data on the hard drive. A virus might still be in the master boot record or BIOS, or of course on a removable media like a floppy disk.

He asked if formating totally removes a virus. It's a general question and the general answer is no. Most viruses will be removed, but i have seen master boot rcord viruses and bios resident viruses. If he said something specific like "does formating remove the klez.h virus?" then i would have given a specific answer.
