| Have my Dell Dimension desktop thats only a few years old. Recently it started doing something bad. All files become corrupted whenever they are opened or modified, especially files downloaded either from the internet, CD/DVD, or from a USB flash drive. I thought maybe the hard drive was going bad, so I bought a new one to start over fresh with. I cannot even finish installing windows or any of the device drivers because when I open any of the installer packs I get the file is corrupt message. I've also tried partitioning the new HDD into a 50GB and 450GB drive (windows running on the 50GB partition). Each time the drive is accessed it sounds like grinding gears on a transmission. Not sure where to go from here. Any input appreciated. Thanks, radugb radug@sbcglobal.net |

| Sounds like a component on the motherboard has gone bad. You'll have to have a reputable shop check it out to determine the exact cause and to see if it's something that can be repaired, or if it's time to replace the computer. | Yup...I should know that anything mechanical can fail because of heat, dust, moisture, etc. I guess I'll have the motherboard tested. Thanks. |

| it could be a problem with the operating system or driver problem. check all your drivers are up to date and you have sp3 for xp installed. |
