Hi - First post on the forum. Hope someone can help... Starting having trouble several days ago. Attempted to watch xvid video thru net. Video initially pointed me to a program that seemed to have bloatware-didn't download. Did download xvid codec from cnet. Shortly thereafter windows explorer started crashing: windows explorer had encountered a problem and needs to close. Re-booted a couple of times trying to fix the problem. BSOD then showed up. Stop error was 7E and file kdcom.dll involved. I assumed a virus/ malware. Was able to boot into safemode. Ran Avast and Spybot without benefit. Also deleted the recently downloaded codec. "fixed" registry using advanced sytem care 3 and also downloaded "autoruns". In autoruns I unchecked every box assosciated with a non-existant file. Next I ran recovery console (installed on hard drive). Ran bootfix without fixing anything. Next ran chkdsk \r. This made the problem WORSE. Now unable to boot into anything! New BSOD shows Stop 24 (no specific file mentioned). I am using a dell with Winxp Sp 1. Any help would be greatly appreciated :D:D(*)

Unfortunately, it sounds like the OS has been damaged beyond repair. I did a quick search, and you've done everything possible. The only real alternative is a clean install. There's a version of Linux that you can bun to a CD and boot from. The OS loads into memory and it will allow you to retrieve your data to an external HD. From there, like I said, you're looking at a clean install which does mean a full reformat of the HD. Beyond that, consider using Microsoft Security Essentials over Avast, and stop downloading stuff like this video that crapped your system. ---------------------------------------------- Work is for people who don't know how to surf MacBook Pro 15" (Intel i5 2.40GHz), Gateway 15.4" Laptop, Windows Vista Ultimate , Photoshop CS5
