vfat is the 32 bit protected mode system responsible for memory management. Therefore i would suspect bad ram or bad hard drive.

Do a scandisk surface scan. Try safe mode. Use msconfig to limit your ram to 24 MB. To do this go to start > run > msconfig, click ok. Click advanced, where it says "limit memory to", check that box, and input 32.
