Thanks Sebastien! Would you like to configure your computer to Microsoft's NTP* (Network Time Protocol) server? The address is time.windows.com. You can configure your Windows Time service to point on this server easily. NOTE: If you have a clean installation of Windows 2003 member server, not in a domain, time.windows.com is the default value. Don’t be surprised if you see this IP in your firewall traffic log 207.46.248.43 UDP 123.

I find that "ntp-anl.usno.navy.mil" is faster on updating time...

NTP is there for years now and a lot of companies used it on their network to syncronize their servers' time / date. Though microsoft used this well-known technology for the first time with Windows XP for home users. |

Atomic time is based of the natural vibration of the cesium atom. Supposedly they're working on a new one based off of... darn, I forget which material, but it's supposed to be like 4000x more accurate than the cesium-based one because the rate of vibration is much, much faster. Also, they have a laser which scans much faster as well.
I think that's how it works, they shoot a very, very tiny laser at a small grouping of cesium atoms and calculate how often the laser gets through (because the atoms move and let the light through, and then move back and block it or something like that). But I'm but a simple programmer, what do I know. |

Also, I've tried the net time /setsntp stuff before (to various other NTP/SNTP servers) and it never updates my time.
The Windows Time Service is started. What do I need to do to get it to sync the time? |

This feature was also possible in Win2k and NT4, so not since winXP. In XP it is added in the GUI but w32time service has been there since win2k and before as NT extra download. Before w32time there was a NT4 resource kit tool Timesrv.exe which also synced.
It was added standard in win2k because of kerberos security, kerberos sends tickets which expire in few minutes therefor all machines in the domain must be timesynced. The domain controller that holds the FSMO role PDC emulator is also time master for the domain. To make sure the time master has exact time you can use an external timesource like a NTP server on Internet using the command above. But you need to restart w32time service!! cause then it reads the NTP server addres from the registry and then sets the time This post was edited by Bink on Saturday, June 21, 2003 at 08:22. |

| Another method which has been quite common for many years is to update the time clock of the server using the signals from a GPS receiver. |
