Windows XP SP2 Delayed Until Late 2004
Time: 05:39 EST/10:39 GMT | News Source: BetaNews | Posted By: Byron Hinson

In a surprising turn of events, Microsoft has pushed back the release date for the second Windows XP service pack to the third quarter of 2004. SP2 was long expected to debut before the end of 2003, a year after SP1 made the rounds. The change in plans came to light by way of Microsoft's Product Lifecycle Web site, which details future support timelines for the company's products.

"Third quarter next year would put anywhere from 18 to 24 months between the first two service packs," Joe Wilcox, senior analyst for Jupiter Research, told BetaNews. "This is a much longer cycle than between Windows 2000 service pack releases."

Let me guess.. beyond other intermediate concerns sounds like microsoft might want some time to make sure they get all the holes this time and wrap in amd64 support while there at it I bet.

This was overwhelmingly likely a typo on their page. Too bad Betanews didn't ask for confirmation before starting a rumor.

if this is true, then who ever was involved in that decision should be fired, their families jailed and their kids neutered.

Well, may be not that harsh, but they should at least get fired. But the next time….

This would be a very bad thing! 40 MB of updates (did it last weekend 2x!!) as of TODAY, not 8/04!

It isnt really that bad for people still running their original install, but for those of us that like keeping fresh systems slippedstreamed install CDs are wonderfull things to have! (and yes you could slip in the updates, but it would be quicker to just down load them)

I agree that this must be a typo. Already if I was an end user with dial-up I would be complaining if I bought a computer that automatically needed 30-40 MB of downloads. If I pay for a new computer, I expect it to be fairly up to date.

#10 Brilliant investigation skills... the service pack will be out Q2 2004 rather than Q3 2004 - HUGE difference!
