IE 7: A word from the team | |

Today at RSA, Bill Gates talked about Internet Explorer 7. As the guy responsible for IE, I wanted to say a couple of things about it.
First, some basics: we’re committing to deliver a new version of Internet Explorer for Windows XP customers. Betas of IE7 will be available this summer. This new release will build on the work we did in Windows XP SP2 and (among other things) go further to defend users from phishing as well as deceptive or malicious software.
Why? Because we listened to customers, analysts, and business partners. We heard a clear message: “Yes, XP SP2 makes the situation better. We want more, sooner. We want security on top of the compatibility and extensibility IE gives us, and we want it on XP. Microsoft, show us your commitment.”
I think of today’s announcement as a clear statement back to our customers: “Hey, Microsoft heard you. We’re committing.” |

It's always funny the spin that companies put on everything. While I hear "IE is shit, it's insecure, it doesn't adhere to standards" from the educated masses, Microsoft hears "IE is so wonderful, but we wish it was slightly more wonderful!".
#2: I assume that you're somehow affiliated with ActiveWin by the AW in your name (maybe I'm wrong and you're just an AW wannabe). If so, I'm wondering why you would ridicule your 'customers' because of their choice of browser. Doesn't sound like smart business to me. Yeah, I'm quite serious. I was a loyal IE fan since v4. I'm also a heavy MS User/Systems Administrator for 14 years now. 3 Primary reasons I switched: 1. Using IE I would pick up spyware on a regular basis. I was constantly running ad-aware, etc and finding my machine littered with crap. Firefox = NOTHING 2. Interface is very familiar, I love tabs, Love no popups 3. Exentions like mouse gestures, banner blocking, etc etc are functional, fun and easy. IE will really have to pull a lot off to gain back my trust. Netscape suffered the same fate once and I wonder if IE will get their act together. |

I'm not familiar with the application Googlefox.
1. I use wininstall to distribute and maintain applications. 2. Extentions (if that is what googlefox is) can be set to check for updates on a regular basis but that may require the user to click on something to approve the update. 3. download the .exe and script the install into your startup scripts (pre-login) -or login scripts if your users typically have local admin rights on their workstations. |

Yeah, download the whole 4 MB exe and run it again. Heck that's not even 1 patch of dozens I've seen for IE. How many last week? 6?
As for the security holes, yes they do and alway will exist, as they do in IE. Let's not go calling the kettle black now. As I stated in #6, I see less day to day crud creeping into my machine from Firefox. Heck not less, NONE. I have more confidence that the developers are working on fixes than MS is. I once fought your fight... not worth it this time. Firefox wins hands down. If you don't like it, you have not used it. |

Now you're acting childish. One more commment like that and I'll brand you as Bill himself. Vanilla? What flavors does IE come in? What specific feature can you provide that IE has beyond Firefox? Here's a simple example: When I want to find text on a page, the find dialog is built into the (vanilla) interface. In IE the search function is a floating dialog box. So, when I hit search, I can actually SEE the results in firefox vs. IE where the result always manages to pop up behind an annoying dialog box. That's just plain smart, simple design that is somehow beyond MS's capabilities. Here's a good one: My MOM can use it. I didn't even help her install the thing. Just pointed her to the website. That's a hell of a test. Have fun flaming that but, try hard to act your age if you can't formulate a simple argument. |

But where are the fixes/patches? I've heard rumors that Firefox is patched/fixed. But I can't find the patches. Firefox can't find the patches. There are no patches on the website. How do you know its fixed ... if they just say so. And don't provide patches.' I have sp2/ie 6 with the patches since last week. Visiting common websites I observe the following: 1. tracking cookies found by ad-aware 2. pop-ups STILL get through 3. Users in the company get POUNDED with crap when they visit poorly choosen sites. 4. Banners/ads everywhere. Bouncing blinking annoying junk -Firefox with one add-in kills all that. *poof* 1.0 is the current copy. What patches are you looking for? they beta tested for months and released about 6 versions after I caught on at .8. There are no patches beyond that. What holes are you asking to patch?
