| Ugh, why are they getting rid of the icons on the right side of the start menu? It's a lot easier to find something quickly by icon than having to read text. |

The start menu looks incomplete like an early prototype to me. I'm sure they will not remove the icons, although it does reclaim some space, but it just looks dull. The display picture hanging off the edge is kinda dumb looking also.
I'm actually starting to not like the search box buried inside of the start menu. I think it should be integrated into the taskbar and immediately available, kind of like Windows Desktop Search Deskbar currently can be. I think it will be a power user only feature like Start, Run... if it's not right on the desktop. |

Ideally, they would allow the user the option whether or not to have the icons on the start menu. That way, both of you numb-skulls would be happy...

There are several very worrisome trends in these shots.
First, both the start menu and the close buttons don't appear to go all the way to the edge of the screen. This means I can't just flick my mouse quickly to the top/right bottom/left to close a window or open the start menu. BAD. Second, they seem to be going for a "displaced" feedback mechanism where the feed back for an action happens in some unrelated place on the screen, in this case the icon sitting awkwardly in the top/right of the start menu. Not too impressed... hopefully this will become more refined before release. As it is now, it's no good. |

nice eye candy but lets not throw out the usability. RMD I think what he is saying is that when a window isn't maximised its not in the top right hand corner of the screen. I agree with you that it should go all the way across and easy to push. I would imagine this is just showcasing what they can do so all the copy cats out there can waste their time cloning something they know to be garbage while they are cooking up the good stuff behind the scenes. Nothing to see here until beta 2.
