6 Windows Vista Updates Released & 2 Windows Ultimate Extras Released | |

Microsoft has released it first large batch of Windows Vista fixes onto Windows Update. There are 6 in total. The even better news is that the first two Windows Ultimate Extras are also now live, both Texas Hold'em and BitLocker and EFS enhancements have been released. I thought Vista was supposed to cut back on the need to restart?

It's probably just one restart. Just like nearly all XP updates indicate the possibility of a restart, but it's 1 restart at the end, not one for each update. Plus, many updates that have that language don't often require a restart, it's just a CYA thing. |

One restart for all 8 - if you opted in for all of them on a fully patched Vista RTM box. [less any language packs, which were also optional].
IE had some new anti-phising code and if you opted for the Bit-Locker update [optional], on Enterprise, or Ultimate edtions, that would cause the need for a restart. The new animated desktops won't be available until after midnight tonight - EST and only for Ultimate edition RTM builds. This post was edited by lketchum on Monday, January 29, 2007 at 19:13. |

I wouldn't be surprised to find that the updates are available only for Ultimate RTM builds that are ACTIVATED.

| From what I know, "hot patching" will be in Vista once Service Pack 1 is released. SP1 will bring new kernel to Vista (from Windows Server 2007), including improved "hot patching". Restarts will still be required for kernel patches, though. We'll see, I guess. |

| #8, Many things that required a restart in the past no longer do - video card drivers, for example, have not. When updates have been released for Vista RTM, I have been surprised when they require a restart - only twice that I can recall since November and despite a few updates being available periodically. Relevant services, however, do stop/start and the test machines do enter their protected desktop modes on occasion. Candidly, it almost seems more elegant and takes less time to stage a restart at the end of the update process than it does to support the hot-patching process. |

| I never understood the big deal about rebooting on a desktop OS after an update. A server OS I want the maximum uptime but is it really going to kill someone to take less then a minute to reboot their desktop system? Seems like just needing something to whine about. |
