Major blames GOW map pricing on Epic costing them 1 Billion Dollars
Time: 02:41 EST/07:41 GMT | News Source: ActiveXbox.com | Posted By: Byron Hinson

The furore surrounding Microsoft's decision to charge 800 MS points for new Gears or War map content which the developers wanted to be released for free took a new turn last night when Microsoft Xbox PR mouthpiece Major Nelson lost all sense of reality and blamed the pricing on the fact that Epic cost Microsoft 1 Billion Dollars when Epic told them they wanted 512mb of memory in the 360 rather than the original 256 that was planned.

Stop me if I'm wrong here, but it seems they have forgotten that if they hadn't listened to Epic there would be a load of titles coming out that don't look anywhere near as good as now and Gears of War probably wouldn't have been the system seller it became. So maybe instead of moaning about how much they cost the company they should be praising them for helping Microsoft make a good decision.

Anyway, the Podcast is out now and features more PR banter than you can shake a stick at, along with more mocking of Microsoft's customers who didn't want to pay for the Gears of War update.

It's why I got the hots to buy an Xbox Elite last Friday.

Luckily, non-availability brought me back to my senses. For now...

#1, No kidding. I'm not very good at games, but I didn't mind losing badly when playing GOW.
The 360 is just such a great system - so complete and flexible and so easy to enjoy. I sit for hours watching the boys play and we use it every night for different media.

TL, I'd give it another look - I've seen some sample screens and it seems the HDMI port is worth it.

TL, I'll likely get one as soon as I can pawn this old-timey x360 off on somebody. ;-)

If you'd actually listened to the podcast (MNR#224), you'd know that Major Nelson was talking about a joke between Epic and Xbox. Also, for those of you who don't remember, the same thing happened witht the Halo 2 maps! So it's going to cost you $10 if you want the maps right now... big deal! Maybe they should make everything on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace free, but raise the cost of games $10-$20? They've got to pay the guys who make the maps somehow. I haven't seen any PC games with free maps (that are made by the developer, not modders in the community), so why should Xbox do it?

One more thing, Major Nelson did not mock Microsoft's customers who didn't want to buy it now. He's saying the same thing I am... if you don't want to buy it, wait four months.

Sorry for the long rant, but you guys really didn't need to jump on Major Nelson's case. This is a little comment blown way out of proportion.

Agreed Devwi. But none of the commenters here were blaming Major.

unrelated: Did anyone see the report that XBox was gonna add a bluray drive today? It was at this link, but is no longer there...

#5 - Epic release free maps for their PC titles. So do many other companies, Saying there are no maps released for free on the PC by developers is nonsense, it happens a heck of a lot from Epic, F.E.A.R by Sierra did, and they are just two off my head at 6 in the morning....my view on it is if they can release them free in 4 months why not now? Milking customers for more money when they are already paying too much for a service that is free on other consoles (albeit not as good a system). I'm still wondering what we are paying for with Xbox Live! these days...trailers and demos 7 days earlier than anyone else?

My view on Major Nelson is that he's a nice guy, but he is just there for PR purposes despite what gets said. Sure it probably was a little joke, but read the forums and his comments site and you'll see that well over 60% of the comments there didn't like what was said.

While you say its only $10 its no big deal, maybe you are one of the ones who feels it fine to pay lots for a gold service that you really don't get anything out of apart from Multiplayer gaming which could be and really should be free for all right now. No one who uses Live! expects everything free, they are some of the most milked gamers around.

I'm not knocking anyone who wants to pay for them either, some people have money to burn while I'll stick up for those who don't and the fact that Epic themselves wanted them released for Free as they are one of the companies that really pushes out for the communities they help create.

#6 - I removed it, my view on it is that it is fake as it doesn't exist on Associated Press site and the quotes I worked out where based on comments Peter Moore said back in January. If anyone wants to carry on commenting on that its all on the Xbox 360 forums and on various sites.

at #5: You really haven't seen any pc games with free maps made by developers?

How about another game by Epic, Unreal Tournament 2004? The latest official patch comes with 11 new maps, 3 new vehicles, and a host of other enhancements, all for free. Some of the extra content is community made, but it's an officially distributed, polished patch that is required to play on updated online servers, etc.

Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War and Company of Heroes, both by Relic, have had two new maps each included in free game updates.

Half-Life 2 had the Lost Coast mini-expansion released for free, which even included an optional in-game developer commentary system. Half-Life 1 had the entire Team Fortress Classic official mod released for free.

Not to mention Counter Strike, which I'm pretty sure is STILL the most popular online fps, which remained available free to Half-Life owners even after it was given official support and released at retail.

Those are a few that come to mind. PC games get free official content pretty regularly. Don't let the console pr guys pull the wool over your eyes that easily.
