On June 25, Microsoft took the wraps off its Windows 7 retail pricing. Bottom line: If you preorder (U.S., Canada and Japan only for now), you can save more than 50 percent over what comparable Vista versions cost. If you don’t, you’ll pay roughly the same for Windows 7 as you paid for Vista at retail.

I see no "Sorry we screwed you" special upgrade for Ultimate owners.
Otherwise it's a bit of an improvement.
Still way too much money for an Operating System.

#2: Come one, MS needs to charge those prices. They're just barely getting by, you know.
That being said, I was expecting more like $150 to upgrade from Vista HP to 7 HP, so $49 looks a lot better.

Hmm, I spoke too soon. The preorder price is what the regular price should be. I'm not paying $120 USD x 2 for Vista SP3.

Yeah, not kidding. I was REALLY hoping for something like that, but I guess it's not going to happen. I too would really like to see a discount to VisUlt users. The "extra" features we paid extra money for which they ended up giving away anyway. Thanks MS!

And the pricing for even an upgrade, unbelievable. It's good to see corporate greed hasn't changed in this time of world crisis in the economy (buy your MS stock now if you can, because when this gets released, the stock price is going to jump).
Oh yea, about the $49 upgrade, read the small print:
* The offer begins on June 26, 2009 and will continue while supplies last, or until July 11, 2009, whichever comes first.
And you're not getting it from MS themselves, its from:
Participating retailers
Come back on June 26, 2009 to find the retailers supporting the Pre-order offer.
So if a participating retailer only has 100 copies, they're going to be gone quick and you're SOL.

So here’s the low-down on pricing for Windows 7. The estimated retail prices for upgrade packaged retail product of Windows 7 in the U.S. are:
Windows 7 Home Premium (Upgrade): $119.99
Windows 7 Professional (Upgrade): $199.99
Windows 7 Ultimate (Upgrade): $219.99
And the estimated retail prices for full packaged retail product of Windows 7 in the U.S. are:
Windows 7 Home Premium (Full): $199.99
Windows 7 Professional (Full): $299.99
Windows 7 Ultimate (Full): $319.99
On a personal note, last night I was playing around and installed the latest Kubuntu in a VM machine and was quite impressed. But openSuSe is still my favorite and even played around with that a little more and can honestly say, KDE4 rocks. I hadn't sat down with it until last night and it's very solid. Just might end up being my main OS here very soon.

Amazon is one of the retailers offering the 50% off upgrades. I think they'll probably have more than 100 copies available. :)
