The article is nonsense and completely unrealistic, taking into account this is Microsoft we're talking about. Now, to the points...
1. Put an end to the whole “open source infringes on our patents” rhetoric/FUD/nonsense. Won't happen. MS wants FOSS on Windows only, so it will continue the anti-Linux FUD about their spooky, unnamed patents forever, or as long as they think they're getting something out of said FUD. 2. Make available all/much of the source code for older, obsolete operating systems under GPL v3 license. This guy is crazy. He has totally misconstrued MS's intentions here. When MS says it loves open source, it means it loves what open source can do for MS -- not the other way around. MS wants to turn the usual two-way FOSS streets into one-way toll roads that only lead to Redmond. 3. Work to offer greater interoperability between Microsoft products and open source products. MS has worked for years on intraoperability. In other words, MS has worked to make open source work better with Windows but not the other way around. The spirit of the open source movement relies on openness and sharing. This ideal is diametrically opposed to Microsoft's proprietary, me-first-now mindset. MS loves open source in the same way that slackers love welfare. |

I agree with Latch [and Darth_Lord]. Microsoft cares enough about open source but not to cozy up with it too much. They are a commercial business.
As for Latch's #2 comment, opening up the source code for anything from NT 3.5 and later could allow malware writers an easy life to write their crap. And as for #3, to expand on Latch's comments, MS has written updates to allow Linux OSs to work with MSA virtualization products. Let alone open source versions of Silverlight and .net Framework and others. |
