I prefer Windows Messenger :-). I just took a peek at ICQ 2002a. Still bloated (could be 3mb smaller).

Weighing in at 970kb, I feel that Windows/MSN Messenger is a much better product.

Messenger is a "much" better product? It has no history function and no way to send messages to offline users. Er, I don't think so! I'm aware that Messenger Plus exists, but a log of messages in a text file is less than elegant. Trillian is equally inept when it comes to message history.

"Bloat" is utterly meaningless in the day of 512MB RAM and 100GB HD's being almost free. It's no longer 1997. BTW, right now, ICQ 2001b is taking 4,152KB of memory, while Messenger is taking 7300KB.... Those figures fluctuate, but you get the idea.

1. MSN/Windows Messenger does have a History function. In the instant message dialog box, go to File>Save and this will save the history of your conversation. Or download the Messenger Plus. The logging feature in Plus is excellent. Breaking down by the time/date like ICQ.

2. You CAN send messages to offline users if they have a mobile phone or pager (everyone I know has one). Right click on their name and "Send message to mobile device". You can also send an offline message to their Hotmail account. Different ways for different programs.

3. Bloat is meaningful when the majority of users are still on dialup 28-56kb modems still. That can take from 20-60 minutes to download. BTW, it's 4mb before extracted. Ouch!

4. My Windows Messenger has never jumped beyond 900kb of memory. That fluctuates by about 50kb each way, but you get the idea.

#12, don't know what problems you are having, but MSN works perfectly fine for me.

#14: For about the last two months, though not much in the last week or two, Messenger has been a mess. It's been flamed and roasted in newsgroups for these "disconnect" problems, and has been written up in major articles on CNET.

#11: A manual save feature is not at all what I mean by logging, and I do use Plus (no choice), but Notepad is nothing compared to ICQ's elegant History database. My theory about MS's laziness in implementing a history feature is so that execs within MS can send messages to each other within the company and be free of worries about those coming back to haunt them in court, like became true with emails several years ago.

I've seen the Hotmail option too, but that's just email.

Your msmsgs.exe in Taskman stays at under 1MB? That's truly bizarre, though maybe it varies by OS (I'm in XP).

Hey, has anyone tried to remove this version of ICQ yet? I installed it and tried it and then uninstalled it after about 5 minutes, literally, because it isn't anything different except for a few new icons and options. Same old useless bloat. However, I did find it interesting that the uninstall program spawned a web page. At first I almost just closed it because I thought it was an ad, but when it came up it was a survey of why I am uninstalling ICQ. I took a few minutes and told them what I thought they could do to make it better. If you'd like to provide some input, here's the link:
