MSN 8 Asks Users to Pay for Some Online Services
Time: 16:00 EST/21:00 GMT | News Source: Gartner | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Microsoft's decision to move MSN to a partial for-pay model reasonably extends the trend in which content and application providers seek financial legitimacy by countering the popular mid-1990s assertion that information ("content" is the more common term in 2002) "wants to be free." The precipitous decline in competition among Internet information and interaction hubs makes the for-pay business model more defensible than ever — the critical issue here.

Bob Smith? I thought you were dead.
You killed my father (and his little dog, too).
You wanna fight? Fight me. :-)

3 posts, and already the dialog is cheesy :-) Well, I started it so I can't complain.

I got so sick of that VeriSign ad in Flash that made noise, that I uninstalled the Flash ActiveX control. I won't use Flash (I think) until Macromedia let's me turn off the sound on Flash movies from one place. I hate having to scroll up and right click and tell an ad to stop playing or looping. I just shouldn't have to do that.

#406 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/11/2002 12:21:09 AM
Cheesy! No cheese here. Well, I guess I am a Velveeta fan, but that isn't real cheese. Just processed fake stuff.

#407 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/11/2002 12:21:25 AM
Was that ad on AW? I haven't seen it.

#408 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/11/2002 12:23:08 AM
It was a vroooming rocket or car or something. I think it was a car, since I think I remember a stoplight. After uninstalling Flash, I got an animated gif that looked just like it. If they would have used the gif to begin with, I wouldn't be so annoyed.

#409 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/11/2002 12:23:19 AM
AW does run SQL, right.

#410 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/11/2002 12:25:01 AM
AW isn't the only site to have noisy flash ads though. BetaNews had some noisy IBM ads a little while ago. I got so annoyed that I stopped going there. Well, OK, I never have gone there much because the content is so lame and the posters don't teach me anything. What's the point of a "discussion" if there aren't people posting who are going to teach me somthing?

#411 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/11/2002 12:25:51 AM
SQL Server? I think so.

http://m.doubleclick.net/578176/dragster.gif is a link to the gif of that ad. I knew if I hit refresh enough I'd get it to come up. ; - )

#413 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/11/2002 12:27:49 AM
I'll try searching my temp internet files for the flash movie address. Yikes! I have more than 12,000 files in there.

#414 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/11/2002 12:33:45 AM
http://m.doubleclick.net/578176/dragster07.swf I think is the flash for that. Since I don't have flash installed anymore, I can't verify it.

Sorry I was gone for a while. I was looking at a video clip of Ballmer at a Gartner conference.
Gartner is so clueless. The guy said the Windows "tax" was 40%. Even on the cheapest PCs, Windows license costs don't amount to 40% of the cost of the computer.

He then asked whether MS should lower the price of Windows and sell on a ratio based upon the cost of the computer. At one point, he even (I know he probably meant hypothetically, but still...) mentioned selling it for $5 on the really cheap computers. Ballmer only mentioned R&D, but how are you going to pay salaries and overhead, let alone R&D at those prices? Linux doesn't even sell for $5.

am i missing something? that link didn't seem to take me anywhere. i think i read a commentary (from paul t?) on that gartner/ballmer interview.

#417 By 1845 (12.254.162.111) at 10/11/2002 12:42:44 AM
i think in that interview, ballmer said that an OEM Windows XP Home was $50. If $50 is 40% of the PC cost, then the total cost is $125. That's not a bad price for a PC capable of running Windows XP. <snigger>

lol, i was scanning the headlines. i didn't notice there was a ballmer on the side.

#420 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/11/2002 12:51:22 AM
The 40% came from some guy they interviewed. You'll see it if you watch the gartner stuff.

#421 By 2459 (24.233.39.98) at 10/11/2002 12:51:59 AM
Scott McNealey was taking potshots at Ballmer, too.

"I think a customer who goes to walmart.com and buys a $199 is going to be disappointed when they get home and it can't run most software"

That's not a direct quote, but pretty close. Ballmer is great!

i just finished the vid, it said 40% to microsoft. this could include microsoft keyboards, microsoft mice, microsoft encarta, msn, microsoft office and of course, microsoft windows. if you count all the software microsoft makes, then surely, you might pay 40% of the total cost of your PC (hardware and software) to microsoft. i know i don't have any non freeware software on any of machines (ok, i have a copy of winzip i registered 4 years ago) that isn't from microsoft.
