Microsoft's decision to move MSN to a partial for-pay model reasonably extends the trend in which content and application providers seek financial legitimacy by countering the popular mid-1990s assertion that information ("content" is the more common term in 2002) "wants to be free." The precipitous decline in competition among Internet information and interaction hubs makes the for-pay business model more defensible than ever — the critical issue here.

Let's just say there will be no more of a flood of people to Apple than there will be to Linux. This has been prophesied for 15 years and has yet to occur. It isn't going to occur unless the United States governement obliterates Microsoft.

"They choose the inefficient way at their own peril. You see that they only have around 95%, according to most estimates, of the desktop market. Why can't they clinch the rest? Perhaps it's the power of the Apple corporation with their Mac OS X which is suprise, surprise built on the UNIX kernel. "
Most of the people keeping UNIX are those that already had expensive UNIX boxes and see Linux or Mac OS X as a way of migrating from the legacy *nix to a less expensive *nix. Or, they are people that will use anything as long as it isn't MS. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Either way, I don't see Apple as the one standing in the way. Maybe other flavors of free *nix. Like Free/OpenBSD or Linux. Of course, IBM is also a more likely candidate.

The funny thing about me arguing in apple vs microsoft debates is that even when i hated microsoft, i still hated apple more.

lol, wonderfully done swith ads? anybody with half a clue who has seen them knows that are lies. os x isn't any more stable than windows xp. xp supports MORE devices than os x. pre os x crashed just as much as 9x did. microsoft should sue apple for liable in the switch ads.

The question is, will Apple follow their own advice and "Switch" CPU vendors and improve their system architecture. Another reason why I don't consider Apple credible competition to MS in the server market. It's hurting their desktop market, too. Check any Mac fan site.

if apple did x86 and had an emulator for windows apps that ran at at least 90% of the speed as the app would on windows, perhaps they'd be serious desktop competition in my book

unless you think the world is made of morons, then i think you're a fool. a half intelligent person (espcially one who already has a fair amount of windows only software) would never switch to apple.

Speaking of Mac fan sites, why does this one have such thin skin. :-)
This happened August 14, 2002 (link removed)
I won't leave this link up long. Bandwidth limit.

Yep. the same lies. Trust me dude, the fastest single Intel/AMD CPU available has absolutely no problem trouncing the dual 1.25 GHz PowerMac or XServe or anything as long as they can't speed it up. They are memory constrained, CPU constrained, AGP constrained and more. Don't trust Apple's benchmarks, many people have proved them false many times, even John Carmack.

that's awesome, n4cer. lol, apple a market leader. perhaps the should read judge jackson's findings of fact before the write something so rediculous. also, i mac fans are so pissed at apple, just maybe, apple should listen to them. this sounds like folks pissed at microsoft over licensing 6.0. i doubt either set of fans will leave either camp, though.

I especially like how the guy tries to claim that his censorship isn't censorship. :-) The perfect Apple shill. Almost good as Phil Shiller (Apple Marketing VP or something like that).

they are right in that megahurtz (or clock speed, more correctly) isn't the only metric
let's see if i remember the equation
clock speed * number of instructions * number of cycles per instruction
If the industry would explain this to people, then people would understand better what metrics mean. Nobody talks about number of instructions or cycles/instruction, so the only number anybody really knows about is clock speed.

No forgery. This actually happened. IIRC, the guy also deleted a few threads deemed too negative towards Apple, and basically told everyone to post nice or not at all.
