THE GARTNER Group is predicting that it's not Microsoft which should fear the Linux operating system, but the Unix vendors instead.
That will obviously re-assure Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer – they've been worrying needlessly about Linux, and should go for a relaxing holiday in Phuket rather than flying round the world cosying up to governments. According to a report in CXO Today, Gartner made a presentation in Mumbai yesterday which claimed RISC/Unix alliances will crumble in the face of a Lintel (Linux-Intel) onslaught by 2006.

Gartner: "We will produce a report saying anything you like for the right amount of $$$"
Maybe next month we will see an updated report saying that both Unix vendors and Microsoft should fear Linux (although Unix vendors are at a higher risk).

#2 It "amazes" you that certain people dismiss Gartner reports or at least act cynical towards them? Really? Have you kept track of all the reports that Gartner has published? This isn't the first time that they've gone out and published a report which is almost completely the opposite of what they have said in an earlier report.
"when it doesn't say what they want it to say but if teh same people wrote a study that said what they wanted it to say they would efend it with their last dying breath."
a) Who says that it doesn't say what I want it to say? I agree with it, this isn't some secret that has been kept quiet - it's been known by a lot of people for a long time that Linux poses a far more severe and immediate risk to Unix vendors than to Microsoft - and it poses no risk to Microsoft on the desktop - Garner don't need to come out with a report on it.
b) You will see that I have that "attitude" towards Gartner no matter what report they write, because they will write whatever you pay them to write.
It never ceases to amaze me just how quickly certain people will jump in to protect Microsoft even if the original poster wasn't saying anything about Microsoft but rather Gartner! You'd think it was as if the original poster had personally insulted them!

Gartner publishes a lot of reports, some of them silly.
However, a lot of their reports are just common wisdom.
Like saying that Linux is cutting into the RISC/Unix market... That's been the ongoing trend now for the past 4 years. Printing up a whitepaper claiming that this trend will continue for the next 2 years until they're all gone isn't particularly insightful.
