ActiveWin.com: Windows XP Section - Turn Off Default Services
Time: 00:00 EST/05:00 GMT | News Source: ActiveWin.com | Posted By: Robert Stein

Our newest staff member, Stephen, just wrote up this list of default services that you should turn off in Windows XP to save on system resources. The default Windows XP installation contains a number of unnecessary services that are started by default. Extra running services consume CPU cycles and memory. To free up system resources and tune your operating system for optimum performance, you can stop and disable the services.

I don't agree with turning off automatic updates from a security position. That should be encouraged to be enabled, otherwise you need to use HFNetChkPro or something like that to scan for patches.

I'd also like to see better details. Not sure turning off Clipbook service is a good idea as it might break some apps, for example.

A comprehensive list of services that can be turned off has been posted on www.blackviper.com for almost two years. He has a very explicit description of each service and what effect turning off that service causes.
