However, the likelihood of Microsoft going $30 billion into hock in order to buy back a third of its shares outstanding seems about as plausible as some of the more creative ways we've come up with for Microsoft to spend its money, such as acquiring Starbucks, all three Seattle professional sports teams and the Bahamas.

They could also spend it on homeless shelters that actually help people get off the street and on their feet. And also, open up civic centers that have computers and tutors for the underprivelaged that so badly need the encouragement.
Like the old saying, "Give a man a fish and you have fed him one meal. Teach a man to fish, and you have fed him for life."

.. microsoft and mr gates already do this via funding 100+ schools and libraries around the country, and even overseas.
I think they should just buy some island country call it the republic of gates, move there and then tell the anti-trust people to go f themselves. Beyond that.. yes they should probably buy back a 5-7 billion worth of stock, and keep hording the rest for a rainy day.

"But if [security] is the sole reason for putting the weight of the government and major corporations behind Linux, the developers may need to rethink their strategy, at least according to some analysts. A report by Forrester indicates Linux and Windows are equally secure -- so a move to Linux for purely security-related reasons might not be the soundest strategy. "
"The research consultancy then created metrics to measure how well each operating system vendor responded with fixes to vulnerabilities. Forrester found Microsoft did the best job at patching vulnerabilities quickly, with RedHat, Debian and MandrakeSoft far behind."

"Using Microsoft's own definition of a critical flaw as a bug which could allow a worm to propagate without user interaction, only 13 Red Hat vulnerabilities were critical during the one-year time period, and they took an average of just over a day to fix, Cox said. "If you add denial of service attacks and privilege escalations, there were 47 issues in total, which took seven days on average to fix," he added."
