After its first eight months of availability, Microsoft® Windows® SharePoint® Services is benefiting customers at organizations of all sizes around the world by boosting productivity and improving access to information while lowering development and management costs. According to Microsoft research, currently 28 percent of Windows Server (TM) 2003 customers report using Windows SharePoint Services, and 45 percent of the remaining customers plan to do so in the next 11 months. In addition, two recent surveys involving information workers and Windows SharePoint Services solution partners indicate customers strongly believe that collaboration technologies such as Windows SharePoint Services and the Microsoft Office System can help them save significant time and increase company profitability.

This is absolutely true, and when used alongside Exchange 2003 and Office 2003, WSS has very seriously provided our clients with significant advantages. When LCS is added and presence awareness is enabled, it becomes even more meaningful.
Finally, reporting services, ported through WSS as web parts and InfoPath, provide for individually relevant business intelligence products that are very easy for users to consume and for admins to support.
While perhaps not for everyone all at once, WSS as a sharing and delivery conduit is very hard to argue against. We have found that not only do our clients like it, they demand it.
We have seen measured lift for all clients - where it matters - in earnings, when these systems are deployed and integrated - most especially so amongst the professions - legal, accounting/finance and advertising, etc...

We have been able to do some fantastic things for our clients using SBS2003, WSS , C# webpart and Office 2003.
Something in our industry worth shouting about I feel.

I know its a part of Windows Server 2003, but the draw back I think you have download it separately as a out of band technology because it did not make it in time for the release of Server 2003. But I guess a new updated version will be included on the Windows Server R2 Disk.

Hi, #3, no, WSS is not about an IDE like CVS, Sourceforge or even VSS...it is also free and is one of many features for Windows Server 2003. While it, and the webparts one can create for use in it, do integrate well with the .NET IDE/VSS, it is not about team or collaborative development - it is about productivity, information sharing and inter/intra-team collaboration.
There are native connections to Office - most especially 2003 and Exchange - again, most especially EXCH 2003 Server.
As regards its use...it is really just a matter of ones' imagination and what business requirements/processes one is trying to satisfy and to what level one wishes to integrate other components. By itself, WSS is pretty powerful, flexible and even fun to work with. As part of enabling secure team collaboration no matter what kind of team, or how long that team is formed for or for what purpose, WSS can be used as an individually customized [based upon LDAP log in and AD], tool through which all kinds of live information can be delivered - SQL Reporting Services add a lot to this and make it possible to quickly and easily build business intelligence products based upon data exisiting in just about any form or place in an organization. WSS is most especially valuable to small businesses with limited budgets and is worth some exploration.

Oh I see, like Office Web Extensions. CVS and Sourceforge aren't IDEs, they are methods of sharing data online for collaboration on whatever development project for any platform, including schedules, task lists, and is a repository for the project's contents where all members may receive a copy.
So WSS is for facilitating an everyday business project, you could describe it as online brainstorming?

The point is though, Windows Server 2003 I think offer more solutions outside the box. Which is a benefit for many!

Like, thinking outside the box? Or the cardboard box that Windows 2003 ships in?

No, but the wrappings are plastic, and the printers used to decorate the box are of superb quality. All the colours were lined up and everything!

SharePoint Portal Server 2003 has a lot offer companies, with features for Company News, team member sites, good old team work space and colloboration, but ability upload documents to these locations is much easier from with the office apps.
