These Avalon 3-D samples show off how to bind together Avalon 3-D and UI in interesting ways involving a 3-D graph with UI layered on top of the 3-D. Also included is a demonstration of a background bitmap below the 3-D graph that shows 2-D on top of 3-D on top of 2-D and some 3-D button styling.
Requires Longhorn 4074 (the WinHEC Build).

#1 Don't be in such a hurry. In this case the anticipation of getting Longhorn Alpha exceeds the joy of using it. You can always become a Partner, it free, and then you'll have free access to Longhorn white papers at
http://members.microsoft.com/partner/competency/isvcomp/longhorn.aspx
This is about the price range you mentioned: free. The papers are very insightful, more than the actual Longhorn Alpha is at this point in time.
