We posted a story earlier linking to news that Microsoft's Xbox Live! online service was running out of gamertags and stopping users from creating spaces in their names when signing up. Microsoft's Xbox Live! Director of programming has mailed in to let us know that it isn't true, there are no problems with gamertags and users can still create spaces in their names if they wanted to.
Spaces are allowed. However, if you collapse the name by removing the space and it equals another tag already in the system without spaces (or with different spacing) then you will not be allowed to use it.

So why are people being asked to change their nicks? Just curious.

Read all the forum postings by Major Nelson (from Xbox Live) in the linked page. It explains why and how few are affected.

The link requires a Passport login. Something completely pointless. Couldn't you answer the question in as many words as you told me to look somewhere else?

LOL @ the inconvenience you suffer as a result of your stubborness to get a passport.

It's not stubornness... It's complete lack of utility. This is the one bit of information that I have wanted access to since Passport was created that I wasn't able to get to.
Passport is dead, mooresa, if you didn't get the memo.... Apparently, the XBox site hasn't gotten it either.
