Workshare, a specialist in collaboration software built around Microsoft Office applications, is aiming to alert businesses to the danger of hidden data lurking in their documents.
The company on Monday launched Metadatarisk.org, a Web site with information on the dangers posed by hidden metadata in documents. The site includes Metafind, a downloadable tool for automatically analyzing and exposing metadata in documents posted on a given Web site.
"There's up to 25 different types of hidden metadata that exists in Microsoft documents," said Matthew Brown, Workshare product manager. "And the more documents get passed around, the bigger the risk becomes."

Microsoft has had its own "Remove Hidden [Meta] Data" tools for a long while,
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=144e54ed-d43e-42ca-bc7b-5446d34e5360&displaylang=en
Meta data isn't a threat to anyone that is a) honest and b) aware of procedures for controlling the release of documents and document types - e.g., legal and accounting firms or medical administration. Moreover, the same Metadata is used in a variety of ways - version control, and DRMS/RMS/IRM processes.
Increasing the knowledge opposite Metadata is good - so long as the context is kept in perspective.
As regards Microsoft's RMS implementation of DRMS/IRM, users must take care to remove the hidden data first, save the file as new file, under a different name and then apply RMS to the document. This may seem like a lot, but it is not and is the same set of "procedures" recommended for the publication of any document - regardless of how it was created, or in what program - not just MS Office. That is of course, unless folks do need to be concerned about version control and "work product" related issues.
