We're looking for nice imagery of a "Tiger" gnawing, chewing, swallowing, mauling, or otherwise disemboweling a "Longhorn" steer (for obvious reasons). Photos, illustrations, whatever - hey, you Mac guys and gals are supposed to be "creative" and "artistic," so how 'bout sending us something we can use to illustrate future Mac OS X vs. Windows Longhorn articles?*
It'll take awhile before such articles will appear - it seems Microsoft isn't quite ready , so we have plenty of time. Longhorn is due "sometime in 2006, maybe," while Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is due in "the first half of 2005." With the image illustrating this article, we have a pretty weak starting point - someone's got to have better. What do you win? Nothing less than your very own photo or image credit in a very small font under the image every single time we use it! How can you beat that? So, let the entries flood forth (include the image(s) and the exact name you'd like us to use in your credit online) and we'll share them in a future article. Email the image and your name to MacDailyNews Webmaster . Thanks in advance.

Won't cost me a cent, I'll get my copy free; and it won't be pirated, either. ;)

#4,
Now THAT is party-line Microsoft thinking :)
The situation doesn't fit reality, so change reality :)

"Longhorn isn't late."
Yes, it is. Please don't mkae statements so foolish that you embarass your fellow softies.
"Clearly for those who always want the latest and greatest, Microsoft’s philosophy is cheaper. "
How are you getting the latest and greatest? You are waiting for 5 years.

People that use a product with 2% (or thereabouts) market share sure can be fanatical.

Not to mention the frequent OSS critical system patches released MORE often.

For example, I bought my copy of XP Pro about the same time OS 10.0 users where getting their free upgrade to (make the OS actually usable) 10.1. The next time I would have to upgrade will be about the time Mac users are buying 10.5 (the 4th $129 upgrade since I first got XP). Clearly for those who always want the latest and greatest, Microsoft’s philosophy is cheaper.
here's an interesting tidbit if you have more than one computer at home
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore?productLearnMore=M9228LL/A
You can get a 5 pack license for osx for $199. Let's say I keep my 5 machines with the latest and greatest for 5 years. Retail price for osx 10-10.5 is $995 retail, plus tax. It's a full version not upgrade price.
5 machines with xp pro then longhorn (assuming longhorn is priced the same) $299 per machine (full retail price, not upgrade) equals $2990.
Microsoft's philosophy isn't always clearly the better choice from a strictly purchase price comparison.

Nice to see that Mac Daily News is already planning on resorting to tabloid journalism with a negative graphic well in advance of their "battle."

#2 It won't bother them, they're happy to swallow everything Microsoft tells them without questioning it.
#12 Are you upset because they beat Microsoft to it?

#16 "last i heard longhorn was being programmed from the ground up using c#.net"
Perhaps you should read up a little more about Longhorn in that case if you think the whole thing is being re-written from the ground up in C#!
"Plus linux isn't the most secure os either... "
Now you're turning into Parkker/LinuxIsTheft/whatever nick he'll be using next. #15 was talking about OS X, which is, strangely enough, what this story is about. #15 never mentioned Linux, you did! You're using the old "look over there" line.
"they release patches too. just not as often"
I think you'll find that "they" release patches as quickly and as often as required. That's what security is all about, not comparing the number of bugs. That way you as the end user get patches as soon as they are ready rather than having to wait up to a month to suit Microsoft's patch release schedule.
#17 "I never have any security issues running XP. Turn the firewall on. Run Automatic Updates. No big deal. "
Wow, imagine if life was that simple, turn on the software firewall, automatic updates and lay back in your ignorant bliss. So you don't:
- Run MS AntiSpyware (as well as a few others to make sure that everything is picked up)
- Switch your user to a non-Admin account
- Go through and turn off all those services that you don't need but run by default
- Lock down IE as best you can lock it down.
- Make sure that non-needed applications aren't set to start up automatically
- Don't set up the Local and Group Policies
"and better than Spotlight will be "
Are your abilities to tell what's going to happen in the future for sale? You could be a billionaire if you moved from posting future predictions here and selling them.

If OS 10.x is so great why doesn't everyone have one. Windows is very expensive, I don't know where you guys buy your software but if your paying for a full retail box and at $299.00 none of you deserve to even be on this page. It is easy to find on the internet Full version OEM Windows for well less that $100.00 even at $299.00 it is still a bargin because I don't have to buy an expensive computer to have it. Maybe the problem is to get OS 10.x on a machine your need the machine a $3000.00 basic computer from Apple itself, oh and while your at it throw in a $500.00 Ipod as well. Maybe thats why the new pc buyer and the masses don't have OS 10.x Lets all remember Apple was in the toilet until as a last resort after stealing the company from him, they asked Steve Jobs back. He had the idea of some pretty colored plastic surrounding their already crappy computer, but that was enough to get the Mac zealots to by more Macs, pretty colors. It wasn't until they decided to overhaul the os and go to a Unix base that the company finally got out of the toilet. MS is Overhauling the OS but they have to do it for 95% of the world using computers. Apple only has to do it for one manufacturer themselves and their, overstated, 5% of the computer world.

I'm confused by all the mac talk. I didn't realize they still made computers. I thought they only made the ipod these days.
I did hear about a mac mini, but I already have a pocketpc, and my pocketpc even includes a small monitor.
