On Saturday, June 9, at the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers, Microsoft let the public see, touch and test-drive the Surface interactive tabletop system that the company unveiled at the end of May.
Surface — the product formerly codenamed “PlayTable,” and later “Milan” — is a hardware-software bundle that Microsoft is building itself. The first models are slated to debut this coming November in Starwood Hotels, Harrah’s Resorts and T-Mobile retail stores.
This weekend, Microsoft allowed the public to get their hands on four Surface prototypes. And the demo attendees seemed quite intrigued with what they saw.

I think it will be useful for Hotels and other public places because it will attract people but from a personal user perspective... I am not excited at all.
I know that a lot of people got very excited watching Tom Cruise, acting in "Minority report" play with giant screens ( how much one of those screens would cost?) hanging from the ceiling but personally, still today, I get more excited by Harrison Ford manipulating a picture using voice commands in "Blade runner'.

That's too funny, mooresa. So, anti-MSers were knocking MS for not being innovative, and were bringing up the scene in "The Island" as an example, only to find out that MS supplied the technology for that scene. When will these people learn that development labs like MS have things like this cooking for 5-10 years before they're finally publicly demonstrated? It's as if they think that MS goes to the cineplex to get their ideas and can then produce a product of this sophistication in fewer than two years; yeah, right.

#3 IMO the problem is that MS almost never brings on the market the most innovative ideas
that are developed in the labs. Just check the OS UIs they periodically show and what, after five years of development, they are using for Vista.

#4, If i recall, you posted a very cool link some months back - to a new UI that held a lot of promise that reflected the problem you mention.

#5 Excellent memory indeed!
The video is on YouTube, this is the link:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=gM5rXyK-AbQ
What is interesting is that the demo is from 2003 or 2002, not sure about the exact year, and in spite of being 4/5 years old it still looks like "Jetsons" compared to today desktops UI.
Oh well, patience is the virtue of the Saints. :-)

#6, Yes, that is the one - thanks for posting it again - it serves to remind people that there is a great deal of research being conducted and that there is a plan in place to advance how people use technologies in the manner depicted. I imagine that one day <soon?> we'll have access to reactive surfaces that fuse the use of our hands and fingers with unspoken, or "mouthed" voice commands in order to interact with computers.
