For the first time in over a year we I have rebuilt our review machine from top to bottom to hopefully keep up with the new releases of both general software and high end gaming. Here are a couple of pictures and below that are the new specs:

I wish there were more--or at least better--case choices out there for BYOPC projects... some are just so hideously ugly (who ordered the "alien head" case???). Something simple and sleek (looks great, no exposed connectors/ports), made out of high-quality materials (no flimsy plastic, and also non-aluminum for noise reasons... unless they've designed it to avoid the aluminum "ringing"--i.e., thick aluminum gauge, possibly plated), no sharp edges or corners, great internal design for both layout and cooling (and to avoid proximity of analog sound components to the PSU), and designed to be quiet. I don't mind spending a little more for a decent case, but it shouldn't have to cost $500, either.
Obviously there is a market for this--look how people rave over Apple's case designs. Is it really that hard? Their cases (Mac Pros) are just simple--nothing fancy. The current Mac Pros are nice, but the case design (externally) is not really remarkable. Lian-Li has some cases that are similar (or rip-offs, more or less!), but the number and variety of cases of that quality and style is disappointingly small. Silverstone and some of the other HTPC manufacturers have some decent cases, but there always seem to be some tradeoffs (e.g., Silverstone tends to mix aluminum and steel on most of their cases, which looks a bit mismatched to me). Hey bluvg. One of my machines at home uses an Antec P180, which is a very nice case. It's a totally different design, and a bit hard to work with. It's a combination of steel chassis, and panels using layered aluminum and plastic.
the only downside is the crappy door on front. It breaks/falls off if you hit it even gently. So I just removed it completely. |

I should mention though the P180 is kind of big and heavy.
One thing I was thinking about on my next computer. Get a small case, and instead of putting the DVD drive in the case, get a USB one up on top of the desk. Or maybe even eSATA if they have that now. Then the computer could just be hidden towards the back and I'll never think about it again(unless I need to hit power button I guess). |

| Sorry about the other picture, ill upload them to the awin server once I get home. Yeah it is a P150 case, love it been the best case I've used and I've been through quite a few before. |

| #8--true, and I mentioned Lian-Li (their V1200 is very similar in appearance to the Mac Pros: http://www.silverpcs.com/popup_image.php?pID=377&osCsid=3751d43e25ce1ae4304b89893e898487). It looks like they've added some models since the last time I case-shopped, but the options still seem pretty slim to me. Maybe part of it is just that the local shops (Microcenter, etc.) seem to carry only the ones with the blinking lights, gaudy plastic case façades, decals, etc. Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the Pontiac Aztek look for cases is very popular??? |

Lian-Li has dozens of models. Look on NewEgg (local shops will always be limited).
I have the V2000B Plus II. It's the bigger brother of the V1000 series. If you really want, it will hold 18 drives :) TL |
