Apple’s iPhone is going to be compatible with Microsoft Exchange Server, after all.
Earlier this month, a number of articles and analyst reports claimed that Apple’s iPhone would not be compatible with Exchange Server, Research in Motion’s Blackberry servers and Motorola’s Good Technology e-mail servers.

Cool! If true (and if it's coming at launch), it will give IT folks a direction to turn. I'm still partial to the BES and BlackBerries (the admin capabilities rock), but Exchange ActiveSync works well also. I'm guessing that the full capabilities won't be supported (password requirements, device wipe, etc.), but sync alone would be a huge help, assuming password policies can be enforced manually.

This is good news and a good start and I'm very glad to see it.
On the through-the-air segment, it's very likely going to be limited to POP, or IMAP and Basic Authentication, only - something many E2K/2/7 admins will not want to support outside of RPC over HTTPS connections - which of course, the iPhone won't initially, and perhaps never, support. They could also use OWA/OMA, which is perhaps, the most likely method over which it will initially connect. Regardless, this is a great bit of news if true, and a great start. It will be nice to say "yes" to customers interested in using iPhones for personal and small business use.

Man, I really have a distaste for RPC/HTTPS Outlook connections.
I have to run this myself, and it forever locks up, loses sync, and is just plain slow.
I have to live with it though...

#3, Huh? your RPC over HTTPS is slow and locks up? It's entirely transparent unless there are serious issues server or network side. Are you seeing network connectivity changes and network warnings? Do you see an hour glass appear over the Outlook icon in the systems tray - often? Are you in online mode, or the default cached mode? How is your HTTP Proxy published to the web and is your SSL Cert(S) class III public, or internally generated and if internally generated, do you have your CA"s Root CA Cert installed to the right local store.
Do you maintain the E2K3/7 org? Couple of other things, are any anti-spam/AV running server side, or are these services supported external to the Exch? Thanks, L
