Microsoft Gives Windows Live Hotmail A Storage Boost

Microsoft(MSFT) is adding storage to Windows Live Hotmail and adding a number of additional enhancements to the online service in a competitive move against Google. The company said it will increase the amount of storage space available to Hotmail users from 2 Gbytes to 4 Gbytes for the free version and from 5 Gbytes to 10 Gbytes for the paid version. The move puts the basic version of Hotmail well ahead of Google's comparable product. Gmail features about 2.6 Gbytes of online storage, according to Google. Microsoft's enhancements to Hotmail, which the company said it will roll out "over the next few weeks," go beyond storage.

"Outlook Anywhere" now, and before that RPC over HTTPS [since Aug 2003] and before that, Outlook to Exchange 2000 via ISA server 2000 using "Forced Encryption over TCP" [required one's ISP to allow "Out-Bound" requests for port 139, which was securely published to a listener on the ISA server (net result, fully sync'd Outlook, no matter where we have been for 7 years now (makes all esle seem lame))].

**If you can stomach the costs.... E2K7 is the way to go... but dad gum, it costs a pretty penny to get started [2 x 64 bit server minimum and a long day in the CLI]. My advice, partner up with my company, or one like us and leverage a hosted Exchange product [until Microsoft begins to offer the same and kicks us in the private parts (we'll still beat them - offering 50 GB vice 5 GB of storage and engineers who know you and your needs)].

I see a vote, but what's the question :)

Since I work from a home office, I too use RPC over HTTPS to access the corporate exchange server.

I'm not real fond of it.

It works, but at least 2-3 times a day it locks up outlook due to a connectivity issue, and Outlook can make one fine damned mess when it locks up.

My only other option is to use the firewalled version of Secureclient (it has routing policies for direct Exchange access), but then I get locked out of my own network and have to disable the policy to copy a damned file !

I live with it :)

I am truly am surprised by the number of Windows Live Mail users.

RPC - Remote Procedure Call.

You can configure outlook to access an HTTPS Webmail System on Exchange via Remote Procedure Call.

It's kinda neat, actually, but it's not the most stable connection in the world.

#3, You should have how it is set up looked at - our customers love it and it never faulters - not even once. ***After E2K SP2 when setting it up was made about moneky proof [one used to have to poundin the CLI and registry for a few hours], RPC over HTTPS was made easier, but it still needed some love around the NSIProxy config in the reg if it was to be stable - also, one's internal DC/GC config as to be very solid stable.

In E2K7 it is a lot more involved for mixed mode E2K3 and E2K7 ops - where an OAB autodiscover file is used vice shared folders for the offline address book. If done right, one can save companies a ton and still provide great service with a dedicated OL and GAL that is unique to their domain, only.

Our client is at https://libermail3.liberatingtechnologies.net/owa - which is a custom client based upon the new OWA [nearly as good and as feature rich as Outlook 2007 itself] Take note of private/public computer profile as well as a low bandwidth version. No domain creds are needed - the user's email address is bound to LDAP/NTLM and scoots it over to AD for the lookup. Finally, we have an auto provisioning tool that deploys Outlook 2007 fully configured and ready for immediate use - it's slick - the package is delivered and configures it all for the user based upon their credentials - all securely and over the web. [beats the heck out of setting it up by other means and it worksa across replication links, etc...] We have a demo account set up for people who'd like to check it that are interested in how to set it up - so email/IM if you'd like to try it.

RPC over HTTPS is rock solid stable here! Its hooked upto Exch2k3 SP2 with ISA2k6. I use it all day and night. Its definitely one of the best things to come out of Microsoft!

Once in a while being an early adopter paid off for me: I signed for MSN mail in '95 so I was able to resist MSN attempts to migrate my account to a WEB based only so today I can receive mail sent to my MSN account in Outlook default "Inbox" without the need to use the separate one created by the "Connector" and, at the same time check my mail on the web.
I still do not understand the reasons behind the stubborn refusal by MS to offer, for paying users, a POP3 service as GMail and Yahoo offer but this is probably just part of my more serious concerns about the future of MS.

lketchum, you are 100% correct about RPC/HTTPS. I have about 20 customers set up with it and it's not that expensive since godaddy offers SSL certs for $79 per year and less. I have e2k7 at home and work and I love it. Max out your server's ram capacity and you're ready to go.
