Windows Server 2008 is going to ship it's next public release candidate very soon. Inside that release will be a CTP of Windows Server virtualization (WSv). WSv will be setting the stage for a whole new wave of technologies so with that in mind, I thought I'd give you a quick peek at the product via a screencast video I created. |

How thin is "thin," anyhow? I'm assuming the hypervisor is NT kernel-based, but just how small is it? I think ESX 3i is only 32 MB.

As good as the improvements are, Microsoft's virtualization product is still behind that of VMware. Without a VM Motion capability, Microsoft's product is another also ran.
Microsoft needs to tighten up their act in this area and develop software that is at least the equal of this competitor. They don't have it now and their yet to be released product doesn't have it either. |

| Definitely behind (though we know nothing on the perf front yet...), but the price is right! VMotion is really cool (and even cooler things are on the horizon), but I personally have limited use for it currently. The hardware requirements for it right now (i.e., same-model, same-stepping) are also pretty steep unless your current hardware was purchased with virtualization in mind. |
