  Windows DreamScene released!
Time: 16:20 EST/21:20 GMT | News Source: ActiveWin.com | Posted By: Andre Da Costa

In early July, I wrote about The Ultimate Team’s intention to ship the remaining promised Ultimate Extras (DreamScene and the remaining Language Packs) by the end of the summer. Unfortunately summer never really came to Seattle this year—so we missed our cue. That being said, we are pleased to announce that Windows DreamScene is now available. As most of you already know, Windows DreamScene transforms your desktop from a static wallpaper image into a full-motion video. In conjunction with Stardock, we’re pleased to also offer a number of cool, new animated DreamScene desktops, including “Aurora”. Additionally, you can use your own videos as DreamScene desktops or visit Stardock’s Dream.WinCustomize.com website to download Stardock’s DeskScapes (an add-on to DreamScene) as well as a collection of fabulous content created by Stardock and members of the Ultimate community.

Oh man, the spin on this is so heavy i'm getting dizzy.

I literally laughed out loud when I read: "people have noticed that the screen which welcomes customers to Windows Ultimate Extras has changed. Our intent in making this change was simply to broaden the definition in anticipation of a broader range of Ultimate Extras being available in the future—that do not necessarily map to the original, narrow definition."

I'm normally a Microsoft fan, but they really dropped the ball on these nonexistant Ultimate Extras.

I assume by the next release (Windows 7) there should be no SKU called Ultimate.

#2 - Yes I agree completely! I certainly hope that Microsoft have learnt their lesson with this extreme failure... and so have I with the extra money from my pocket to have Vista Ultimate.

C'mon folks... Windows Vista Ultimate is not about "Ultimate Extras"

Vista Ultimate is unique in a great many ways that have nothing to do with "extras"
Linked here, because I got tired of repeating myself:
What is so "Ultimate" about Windows Vista Ultimate?

#4,

As a consumer, it sure as hell was for me. There's a reason I spent the extra $100.

#5, TL, sorry to be dense... I'm old and dumb.

Did you mean that "extras" drove your decision to get Ultimate, or as I suggested, there are many other more significant reasons to consider Ultimate? Thanks. L

#6 I do not like shooting on the Red Cross but...

No matter what could be great about Vista Ultimate the point is that MS advertised many things that were not delivered.
If you promise something to your customers you must deliver it, no matter what.

30 years ago Fiat, the biggest Italian automaker, bundled in an Auto Magazine publication a "key" shaped as a traffic light; the idea was to take the key to a dealer, enter it in a scanner and try your luck: prizes were a car, fifty mopeds and gift certificates.
Something went wrong with the productions of the keys and instead of the planned fifty, more than a thousand people got the "yellow light" meaning they won a moped. What Fiat did? It delivered mopeds to all the people who "won" because they did not want to get in a PR nightmare.
How is it possible that a corporation, the size of MS, missed to realize the damage to the company image something so stupid was going to create?

Said that. would I have bought the Ultimate Edition if all these extras had not been offered? Probably yes because I wanted both the features in the Business Edition and the ones in the Home Premium one.
On my desk I have three monitors: I have Outlook on the left one, I run most of my apps on the central one and on the right one I have MediaCenter playing BBC or CNN muted.

So while I agree with you about the value of Ultimate Edition, especially if MS will fix the issues with MediaCenter, the blunder created by a shortsighted and poorly planned and managed operation is still there.

Why would anyone in their right mind spend the extra money for something when they don't know what those extra somethings are going to be. I got Ultimate because it allowed me to run in a domain and had Windows Media Centre along with other features that I wanted. To me all the "extras" that come along are just bonuses.
