Microsoft finally unveils its answer to Google Docs
Time: 01:36 EST/06:36 GMT | News Source: | Posted By: Andre Da Costa

After months of speculation about what it would do to stave off potential encroachments on its Office turf by Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Microsoft has spelled out its strategy: Office Live Workspace. Office Live Workspace is, in Microsoft’s words, “a new web-based feature of Microsoft Office which lets people access their documents online and share their work with others.” It’s aimed at consumers and small-business users, not corporations who are interested in being able to access their documents anywhere — from any computer and any browser.

SEATTLE--In another clear sign that Microsoft sees the threat posed by its traditional business moving online, the company is readying a rival to Google's Documents and Spreadsheets. The software maker is announcing Office Live Workspace, a free online tool for viewing, sharing and storing--but not editing--Office documents online. (It's existing Office Live efforts will be rebranded as Office Live Small Business.) It's not quite ready--starting Monday customers will be able to put in their name to be part of a beta testing program expected to begin later this year.

I just read that "Microsoft Office Live Small Business Bob Workspace Dot Net" still requires the Office (fat client) application software to be installed on the user's computer. I'm really missing something here. What is the point? How is this even competing with Google Docs, or any of the flash-based online office products out there?

#3: It's MS' way of innovating by following what everyone else is already doing, but still tying it to Windows and Office.

Windows Live Skydrive seems like it offers a better value in terms of storage to Office Workplace. I get 500 MBs on Skydrive while this only offers 250 MBs, whats the deal here?
