Microsoft and Bungie to "Evolve" Relationship
Time: 10:32 EST/15:32 GMT | News Source: Press Release | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Microsoft Corp. today announced a plan for Bungie Studios, the developers of the Halo franchise, to embark on a path to become an independent company. Microsoft will retain an equity interest in Bungie at the same time continuing its long standing publishing agreement between Microsoft Game Studios and Bungie for the Microsoft owned “Halo” intellectual property as well as other future properties developed by Bungie.

The critically acclaimed Xbox 360® exclusive “Halo 3” achieved $300 million in global sales in its first week. Released in Europe on Wednesday, Sept. 26, “Halo 3” is the fastest-selling video game ever and already one of the most successful entertainment properties in history.

“Our collaboration with Bungie has resulted in ‘Halo’ becoming an enduring mainstream hit,” said Shane Kim, corporate vice president of Microsoft Game Studios. “While we are supporting Bungie’s desire to return to its independent roots, we will continue to invest in our ‘Halo’ entertainment property with Bungie and other partners, such as Peter Jackson, on a new interactive series set in the ‘Halo’ universe. We look forward to great success with Bungie as our long-term relationship continues to evolve through ‘Halo’-related titles and new IP created by Bungie.”

“This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games,” said Harold Ryan, studio head for Bungie. “We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft’s platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios, and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through ‘Halo’ and beyond.” Bungie Studios will remain in its current location in Kirkland, Wash.

Got to love the wording of this press release, you really have lol. I guess "Evolve" is a better word than "Split"

Welcome to corporate crapspeak. I just got a note in my cable bill the other day telling me my rate was being "adjusted". It's been "adjusted" several times over the years, and I notice that the adjustment is never down. Do they think I'm so stupid that I won't notice that "adjusted" is being used in placed of the simpler, more correct "raised" or "increased"?? Why do they bother?

#6 They don't agree with me - which is why they sold their share calling it a "strategic move" or something along those lines. However, coming from the customer point of view, I thought it was a bad move - giving the competition a company like Rare who made, amongst other things, the Donkey Kong series, Golden Eye and Perfect Dark.

Not sure if the same thing is happening here - but based on the opinions of many xbox owners I see a similar end result. Whilst I personally don't like the Halo franchise, it doesn't bring anything new to the world of FPS for one, there are enough xbox voices out there ready to start a fight if you happen to say anything negative about it (a bit like what happens here if one should dare to criticize Microsoft) .

Maybe they can re-write Monster Truck Madness 2 for xBox. I really loved that game :)

So far, I'm having more fun with LiveArcade than any of the big titles being released (except maybe for Bioshock).

I'm addicted to Ultra3D Minigolf Live :)
