I think Microsoft used to actually care about trying to help the consumer. I may not think that they did wonderful technology, but I think they really did try to serve their customers. But look at their [digital rights management] and their "Genuine Windows Advantage" -- they're not trying to serve their customers any more in their products; they are adding features that are actively bad for users, because they probably feel like they aren't even competing any more.

Linus just sounds like a disgruntled MS Fanboy. If you read the entire article you will be surprised how much he respects and praises Vista - real eye opener.

I agree with Torvalds. MS early on played up too much to Vista's "bells and whistles" and not enough to its usability and security advancements. They don't understand that they need to inform the public, through commercials if necessary, on what Vista can do for the average PC user.

After this season's Linux releases, I tried out openSUSE 10.3, Mandriva 2008 and Ubuntu 7.10 and came to the conclusion that usability does not even match that of Windows 3.1 or Windows 95. It may have become as easy to use and featureful as Windows, but after trying it out myself without depending on what people say, for me at least, it is clear that the usability of Windows or (OS X) is far far far far superior to Linux.

#1, I'm a MSFT shareholder too and the legitimate owner of every piece of software on every one of my computers--WGA is entirely the wrong thing to do. Given your stance on WGA, I assume that you have also paid for and properly licensed every piece of software on your computers too. This would include music and other copyrighted materials. You wouldn't want to be a hypocrite...

#3, I agree. Too much emphasis on "pretty". The loss of revolutionary technologies, like a new file system, are where Microsoft really dropped the ball in Vista.

#8: Technology that inconveniences everyone should be used to ensure that nobody steals from MS, but it's OK for you to steal from musicians, the music industry and their shareholders. Interesting position.

#10: versus not having to type in any string at all, yes it's an inconvenience. Plus, there's the intermittent problems with both WPA and WGA. AW just moments ago posted a story about changing a video card in Vista can deactivate it. I know you're a die-hard Microbot, but even Ketchum is complaining about these intrusive, unreliable technologies MS is shoving down everyone's throat. And they can only get away with it due to their monopoly and the lock-in it gives them. Any other vendor would be thrown out for these shenanigans.

btw I just read the oink got shut down. Looks like you'll have to find a new avenue to steal music from.

oink is down. yeah, that does hurt. the music is available elsewhere, but the ease and amazing selection will never be duplicated. i realized today that if you gave me $100M, I could not duplicate the usefulness of that site. It was that good. Hopefully it'll come back soon, albeit in a different country. I just hope the new URL is less than 16 characters long, else my arms may fall off before i get there. silly coffeeboy.
