And lo, it was foretold in the fall of 2007, that a mobile telephone would lead humanity out of the New Dark Ages and into a better future free from roaming charges and buttons.
Time, which likes to anoint things, has named Apple's iPhone the "Invention of the Year," following such recent IotYs like YouTube and SpaceShipOne. The number one reason why the iPhone is Time's Invention of the Year? "It's pretty." Further: "An example: look at what happens when you put the iPhone into 'airplane' mode (i.e., no cell service, Wi-Fi, etc.). A tiny little orange airplane zooms into the menu bar!" Cool!

I have not read the article yet but I'd agree with naming the iPhone the invention of the year... or at least from the general publics point of view it makes sense.
Sure the iPhone's UI is the only truly "cool thing" about it and Apple do deserve a good pat on the back for that.

These guys are morons -
My vote goes to either the new quad core Intel CPU or the NVIDIA 8800GT GPU. These things are freakin' amazin'.
Ain't physics great? You can really whip those electrons. Too bad p-chem just can't cut it.

Just shows the perception and knowledge non-geeks and the general public has. Unfortunately, the iPhone is going to be more popular, just because of its name. Other phones inspite of being technically superior and cheaper will have less marketshare.

Invention of the year? The iPhone is not an invention in the sense that the first light bulb was an invention. I vote for the research group that tuned a single carbon nanotube to act as a radio tuner and amplifier all in one. That's an invention.

#4, No kidding.
An evolutionary product should never qualify for "invention of the year".

Agree with product of the year but once again Time has got it wrong, it was an invention. It is a great product but at least get the damn title right.

I canceled my subscription to Time Magazine back when the named Jeff Bezos Man of the Year. This was back before Amazon was actually profitable, and was losing 10's of millions of dollars per year, when there were so many more more qualified individuals that year. In high tech alone, there was Steve Jobs returning Apple to profitability that year, while Amazon was still losing money. I don't recall any of the other possible individuals any more, but I recall there being several more qualified than Bezos. Naming the iPhone the invention of the year just shows they still don't have a clue. Yeah, it is a cool looking device, but I don't think it qualifies as the best thing invented during the year. Maybe a better category for it would be Most Hyped Product of the Year.
