After a disappointing showing by Windows Vista SP1 (see previous post), we were pleasantly surprised to discover that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (v.3244) delivers a measurable performance boost to this aging desktop OS. Testing with OfficeBench showed an ~10% performance boost vs. the same configuration running under Windows XP w/Service Pack 2.

All SP3 is is a collection of all the updates since SP2. Which everyone who runs XP already has.
Also, Vista is a self tuning OS and gets faster over time. If you are just comparing a fresh install it doesn't show it'self favorable.
And this is only a single test.
I imagine with better hardware Vista will scale better than XP and would surpass it in tests. I have better hardware and for me Vista is faster. I'm using the 64bit version on my desktop and the 32bit on my HTPC. The x64 version feels faster to me.

Great in practice, but I am not convinced Vista's self-tuning actually works.

1# very true - Vista does get better the more one uses it and it stays that way.
After a short run in time, Vista hits its stride and runs like a raped ape.
oh... and that express card slot in your new latop.... or PC adapter... drop a 4GB micro drive into and turn on ready boost on it. That and 2 GB RAM and Vista [even 32 bit] rips.
30 MB/s sequential reads, 27 MB/s sequential writes.

All the alleged "experts" in our press and industry need to really step up their game.
I am getting so very sick of ass-hats that can't make a PC run well and more so opposite the twits that don't really know much about Vista, or how it works. It can easily run circles around XP and OSX/*Nix
It's like yelling at a pile of freaking rocks and it's getting old.
