At a time where everyone is anxiously awaiting the upcoming service pack for Windows Vista (and while others flock back to Windows XP in droves), yet another flaw in the Windows Vista operating system has been discovered that can bring the Windows shell ("Windows Explorer") to its knees within 20 seconds. Even worse, this issue occurs under every day usage of the operating system if you use the Search function regularly with boolean search operators.
1. Click on Start, and then click on Documents.
2. In the Search entry box, type "NOT Shortcut" (without the quotes).
3. Click on the "Save Search" button and save the search query as "Search Test".
This has been confirmed as a flaw in Windows Vista (all editions) and Windows Vista 64-bit (all editions), and even worse, the issue still occurs on the latest release candidate for Service Pack 1. The bigger question is, will Microsoft step up to the plate and fix this issue or will they let it pass on by while they work heavily on Windows "7", ignoring the fact that Windows Vista still has flaws and inconsistancies that are seeing larger companies hold back deployment until 2009 or even skip Vista?

Something that is as rare as this is not what I would call serious. A bug, yes, but serious? I tend to agree with the opinions of most of the folks in the Neowin thread where this is being taken far too seriously.
Also, one other note, how is the source Neowin when they're linking back to ActiveWin in the thread over there unless they also edited it which makes it pretty confusing.
If I'm not mistaken, the source is http://www.windows-now.com/blogs/kmkenney/archive/2007/12/30/serious-windows-explorer-bug.aspx

This is OLD news... and its not a serious bug IMHO. Just how many people are really going to do this on a daily basis??

this news is pure FUD because:
1. it's not a flaw
2. that Windows Explorer window will shut down, but the shell is still live and I can still continue my work without problems, I can open another windows, I can launch other applications, etc.
3. only a stupid user (such as who wrote this news) would write "NOT Shortcut" and save that search
4. windows 7 doesn't exist, they're not heavily working on windows 7.
5. who cares about large companies? they will skip windows 7 when will be released, as usual... same story... same stupid complains! I'm an home user and I like Vista, I don't care about the next OS because Vista will be my OS for the next 10 years.

In my 64-bit Vista the fault module points to BEX64. This is DEP related.
Hardly what I'd class as serious.

I started to write a reply to this "article" but realized that I would only be dignifying this nonsense.

Like, OMG! A bug that, like, crashes explorer and forces it to restart...... CRAZINESS! Seriously, there are already other bugs that cause this..... I agree with #3 as well.... only a FIDIOT would do this. I mean seriously, if you're LOOKING for bugs and all you can find is this..... get real..... ok, BLASTER represented a serious flaw.... THIS........ is a joke.

friends, the hate-everything-msft crowd is desperate. they will latch (no pun intended) onto anything they can. just sit back and appreciate FUD for what it is.

I responded to this topic over on neowin - not only is it a bit silly, but there are ways around this specific textual bug.
>#6 - This is a common myth and why people don't take advantage of the Search Features beyond what applications are already using it (i.e. Outlook, OneNote, Explorer, etc).
The Search system in Vista is more than just locating your documents, it is also about getting lists of specifically what you want or telling an application to process a specific set of files based on your search criteria. The search results can be used not only in cmd, but in any application that is use to processing files in a folder.
Take a look at my post on neowin for some more examples and a guide to some of the syntax of the Vista search engine (Although you can use natural language as well).
As I mentioned on neowin, check out Start++ from brandontools.com - it is not only handy, but demonstrates how extensive the search system in Vista is and how it can be used in numerous situations beyond just 'finding' something. For example click start and type: playartist cher - media player (or your choice of player) launches and starts playing all the songs on your computer by cher. This tool should give both developers and users a sense of new ways to use the Vista Search system.

Talk about a bug - If my computer starts playing Cher I'm definitely going to switch to Linux.

Whether or not this is serious depends on how Explorer is crashing. If its crashing due to any kind of memory or stack corruption, this might be a security issue.
