Time: 23:59 EST/04:59 GMT | News Source: InfoWorld | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Microsoft unveiled on Monday new content partners for its Silverlight technology and provided details of a forthcoming DRM (digital rights management) technology for its multimedia platform.

The company made these announcements to promote the use of its Silverlight multimedia development and deployment technology to broadcasters at the annual NAB Show 2008 in Las Vegas.

Among the companies that now have projects based on Silverlight are MSG (Madison Square Garden) Interactive, Tencent, Abertis Telecom, Terra Networks Operations, SBSi, MNet, and Yahoo Japan, Microsoft said.

I'm pulling up the sofa and waiting with popcorn... re: the obvious (and uneducated) DRM comments that are going to be made :-(

That Article. It has no details!

Silverlight, so far, is getting high marks in my book as a developer. I haven't made anything huge in it... but its far ahead of Flash. I hope the DRM is top notch so companies will jump into the multimedia streaming arena feet first.

As good as Silverlight may be, it will have an uphill battle for years. Flash is entrenched and will not go without a fight.

#3: Flash HD is inferior to Silverlight. I hope that quality wins this battle, and not Flash by default.

#1: DRM, as almost every absolut terms, is neither good nor bad; the problem is the way it is implemented.
The way it has been done, at least in the majority of the cases, so far does not make me willing to open the wallet.

Fritzly - it looks like I'm following you around LOL!

Seriously, yes I do agree with you about the implementation. I personally don't like it but I also understand its a legal and "fact of life" requirement. From the article they are referring to using Silverlight for providing the method of transport for live TV broadcasts (which is pretty neat), obviously thats the reasoning for DRM to those TV businesses.

I also agree with rxcall that Silverlight will have an uphill battle with Flash. From what I've seen of Silverlight and Flash, I personally like Silverlight - not because its "Microsoft made" but just how easy its to do things.

Of course, I should counter that statement by saying I never really got into Flash... so its probably just a lack of knowledge thing.
