Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said the company could re-evaluate its plans to phase out Windows XP by June 30, if customers demand that it stick around. So far, they have not.

XP should stay alive until Windows 7 hits the market.
I'm not seeing allot of businesses adopt Vista, maybe that will change when Vista SP2 comes out. |

Maybe I'm the exception but my small business is moving to Vista. We have about 50 PCs in the office and the transition to Vista has not been smooth. Even so, my main concern is security and I feel that XP even with the usual safeguards is just not adequate. We don't have in house IT and a mixed XP/Vista environment is proving a challenge. It's still worth the hassle in my opinion. Our data security is especially critical. From my perspective, if cost was not a factor, we would be all Vista at this time. Hopefully, it still will happen by the end of the year. I honestly believe those dragging their feet on moving to a more secure computing environment (Linux/Mac OS/Vista) are naive or stupid. PS - We have no other OS choice than MS because of specialty applications. |

I know first hand that people don't want Vista. The average computer user is fed up with Microsoft shoving operating systems down their throats. It's happened all the way down the line. Last year when Vista was officially released, that's all that Dell was allowed to sell. I was a phone agent for an outsourcer that worked for Dell. It was crazy people both companies, and the average user called in complaining they were forced to buy Vista, no option for XP. After a month or so Microsoft came to Dell and said that they could sell XP again, and 99% of the pissed off users went away. Then only people not paying attention bought Vista and called in to complain.
So I find it funny that a year later Microsoft comes back saying this... no one is voicing they want support for XP continued. I think it's just a ploy to force people over to Vista. Just to suck people's money out of their pockets on tech support trying to get the thing compatible with software until Windows 7 comes out. Say what you will but Vista has been the worse rollout of Microsoft software since the start of the company. There have always been glitches, but nothing as bad as Vista. And another personal thought on that is because SOOO much was promised with Vista and all that was delivered is the sidebar (which you can download a better one for free, Desktop Sidebar) and a lot of headachs. The whole BS with Microsoft dumbing down the OS to meet the standards for Intel says it all. Sorry for the rant but I think there is a lot more sneakiness going on with Microsoft then ever before... (PS I actually created an account just to make this post... that's how much it bothered me) |

#3: Wow, you really must be new here. Let me give you some tips to help you fit in:
- Vista is perfect - everyone loves Vista, and by extension, Microsoft - anyone who doesn't love Vista is an asshat, or part of the global anti-Vista media conspiracy - Microsoft is a wonderful, ethical company that struggles against the onslaught of the forces of evil (FOSS & the EU) - Microsoft invented everything, and everyone else copies them There, I hope that helps get you up to speed with ActiveWin. |

It is unfair to say that all that was delivered with Vista was a new sidebar. I know you were probably trying to be facetious - if you weren't you should really take a look at the documentation on the changes that Vista has over XP. The major reason for the poor roll out that you point out had nothing to do with Vista or MS - drivers and program compatibility are the responsibility of 3rd party developers. Do you really believe that this would have been any different with Windows 7 roll out? The thing (Vista) does not get compatible with software - software gets compatible with Vista. These issues are not new and are prevalent with every major software/OS roll out. For those that were in the business back when XP was released these issues will be very similar. Also, I don't get how MS dumbed down the OS for Intel. MS screwed up with the Vista capable program but having system requirements that were too low in order to please Intel. I don't know of any changes made to the OS in order to dumb down the OS itself for them. Also be aware that if you say anything mildly positive about MS or Vista you will have Latch there to say you are a shill or microbot which this post will probably generate. |
