Microsoft Says No Client Backup In SBS 2008
Time: 16:44 EST/21:44 GMT | News Source: CRN | Posted By: Kenneth van Surksum

Microsoft on Friday announced it won't be including client PC backup functionality when it releases Small Business Server 2008 to manufacturing in the second half of the year, but will consider adding the feature to future versions.

Chris Almida, a program manager with the Windows Small Business Server team, made the announcement at SBS Migration's IT Pro 2008 Conference in New Orleans, where many of Microsoft's Small Business Specialist partners are gathered this weekend.

Microsoft decided not to include PC client backup in order to ensure that SBS 2008 ships on time, but the vendor is looking at how and when to add the feature, said Joel Sider, senior product manager for the Windows Server Solutions Group, in an email to ChannelWeb.

Actually it isn't a problem, as this is talking about CLIENT backup. Like Home Server does...

So the client PCs still backup to the server, and the server still has its OWN backup software.

The only thing is that users were wanting an automated backup to pull the client computers backup automatically instead of having to set the client PCs to backup.

This is basically a policy and a couple of lines of an install script that you run on the clients, and then they backup to the server.

THIS IS SO NOT AN ISSUE. It was just a new feature of Home Server people hoped would make it into SBS. PERIOD.

Yet SBS will get an Exchange Aware version of WBS even though full Server 2008 does not. WTF is up with that? Anyone running Exchange is now forced to purchase backup software or risk running without backup, no more ntbackup.exe type stuff allowed. :(

There is a new automated tool; however, you have been able to back up Exchange easily since Shadow Volume copying was added to NTFS...

There is NOTHING that can't be backed up by the OS with NTFS's snapshot system that is exposed through the shadow copy service.
