Microsoft Press Release |
Posted By: Jonathan Tigner |

Kaiser Permanente and Microsoft Corp. today announced that the two companies will pilot health data transfers between Kaiser Permanente’s My Health Manager and the Microsoft HealthVault consumer health platform. Pairing two leaders in online health innovation, this pilot program is expected to unveil new strategies for expanding consumer access to online health information and management tools.
The pilot program will extend the functionality of the successful Kaiser Permanente personal health record, My Health Manager. Already, My Health Manager’s more than 2 million users have convenient and easy online access to clinical information and health management tools, including e-mailing your doctor, online prescription refills and appointment scheduling. Connecting My Health Manager to the HealthVault platform will allow users to combine personal health information from Kaiser Permanente and a wide range of health and wellness management applications and devices such as blood pressure monitors.

True online health innovation will come when one can purchase a "kit" at Wal-Mart, or elsewhere, that contains a blood pressure velcro unit, finger monitor for pulse, small stethoscope, and a specialized webcam that an online doctor will direct you where to put it. (Could be funny, but it's not intended to be). The whole thing plugs into a USB port. A doctor online will direct the gizmos from elsewhere, ask you some questions, and give you a thumbs up or send you to a local doctor for further treatment, if necessary. Needed prescriptions would be sent electronically to your pharmacy of choice. The key to such a system working will be to encrypt the USB via built in dongle so that only approved doctors around the world can diagnose someone. Storage would be in the original package that when activated exposes the equipment to UV light for 30 minutes to kill germs. The equipment could be used by more than one family member on the same computer.
Of course such a system would require a government with an understanding of technology, a true desire to allow a choice of type of low cost health care, and not a bunch of morons that think the Internet is a series of tubes.

Version 2 of the kit includes the Colonoscopy USB cam and the IEEE1394 hernia test hand. Both units are reusable by multiple family members. I assess that the hernia test hand has the most potential for abuse.

How about a WiFi enabled penile implant? The possibilities are endless.

All this money wasted...
The problem with healthcare in the US isn't information. It's the ability to afford it in the first place. This money would have been better put to use building a Jail to house all the greedy bastards that have completely ruined any resemblence of Health Care in this country.
We can start with the Pharmacuitical company's.

Microsoft is wasting its time. Already over 50% of the healthcare in the US is controlled by the government. The government low balls what it actually costs to provide the care and then those of us that actually pay for our healthcare get the bill. Further, the millions of illegal aliens and others that just refused to pay add to our health care bill and additional taxes at the local, state, and federal levels.
The answer in this election cycle seems to be to socialize our health care system even more than it already is. That will result in Canadian and British levels of health care. In other words, queue up buddy! Except in the case where you may be too old or the procedure too expensive, then its drop dead!
What's ironic is that Gates, of all people, running the largest private charity on the planet, knows the inefficiencies first hand of attempting to work with governments to get things done to help people.
