MobileMe messaging is being updated effective immediately. In order to set appropriate expectations with our customers, focus your sales discussion on "automatic sync" rather than "push." Additionally, we will no longer describe MobileMe as "Exchange for the rest of us." |

Paul nails this one - most especially the importance to Apple of Windows users - who Apple appears to not only ignore, but insult deeply and on a regular basis.

| Fifteen minutes to sync is practicaly the same as automatically, if you're in a coma. MobileMe sounded great before it came out. It sounded too good to be true, and it was. Great article. |

The bit that chaps me is that the way the are trying to explain all of this is so half-witted, that they are working to cast a negative light on "Direct Push" as it is implemented in Exchange and Windows Mobile. They are spinning this so badly that they are confusing consumers very badly - some of the worst explanations and apologists' drivel attempts to shift blame onto Microsoft - it's insane.
Look... if you're new to mobile messaging, understand this: Exchange/Windows Mobile's Direct Push does not need SMS, or an SMS gateway. The mobile phone does not "poll" the server at all - it polls "with" the server - so as new messages arrive at the server, the server sends a notice to the mobile phone over the carriers data network, which interconnects to the public Internet. It is sent as soon as it arrives into the user's mailbox!!! With Windows Mobile 5.2 w/SFP and higher, the user never has to "sync" or "Dock" "craddle" or otherwise bork with their phone - it all "Just Works" and it is secured using SSL. Nothing special is needed and all email, calendar items, contacts and tasks are sync'd bi-directionally between the host server and all connected phones, and computers - regardless of the number (I personally sync 11 computers and a phone) Cont... |

Documents are even better....
With Exchange one can email directly into document libraries! One can use shared folders of many types and there is a mobile version of every FREE Windows Sharepoint (version 2 and or 3) site!!! There are secure mobile IM clients that integrate with all of this - live communications server and advanced presence tokens that are native to Exchange/Outlook/LCS and any app you want to drop the control into. It is simple, powerful and guess what? It's cheap! Great Exchange hosts charge <15.00 per user/month for unlimited accounts with included multi-layer anti-SPAM and anti-virus. Guess what else...? it works with the bloody iPhone 3G, too! If you want the best experience, use a good Exchange host, or spend as little as one does for small business server, and if your company has the need, run your own. All this "cloud this" and iPhone/MobleMe BS is making me sick. Grown ups have been doing all this since late 2000!!! (Forced encryption over TCP pre-dated Outlook Anywhere by nearly four years!!!!) Sorry for the rant, but this stuff is just bad form on our industry's part. |
