Last month, Canonical launched Ubuntu 8.10 with significant new features and performance upgrades over previous versions. But what is becoming increasingly clear is that the free, downloadable operating system has in many critical ways caught or surpassed Microsoft's flagship desktop operating system -- and poses a significant threat to the software giant if the market catches on. |

Every time one of these stories comes out, various microbots laugh & point and claim how ridiculous it is, but they never, ever offer up anything to counter the arguments of the author (well, except for parkkker but his road leads to CrazyTown...)

| I'm not a huge Vista fan, but Linux a threat? It's too big a pain in the a** for most people, the hardware (and software) support is crap, etc. I'd rather go back to using Windows 95, seriously. |

#6: No, but it would give your position a lot more weight if you would spell out exactly why you believe the author is full of crap. While I personally believe many of the comparisons in the slides, there are avenues where Windows shines that the author hasn't touched. I don't for a second think Windows is in any real trouble. 10-20 years down the road may be a whole different ballgame, however.

10-20 years? The Linux supporters are always saying that. They said it 5 years ago and they are saying it now. As for Vista vs Ubuntu - I have the latest versions of both on my laptop and while I am a supporter of open source and Linux - Ubuntu beats Vista in only one area - cost. Most people will argue with TCO they wouldn't even win that. Linux distros have made great strides in the past 5 years but they still feel unpolished overall when compared to OS X and Windows OSes. Example - Vistas sleep function works so well that I use it exclusively. Ubuntu's by comparison works only half the time on my laptop. The other half the time the system comes back to a blank screen and needs to be hard rebooted. I have spent some time trying to figure out the issue but just didn't bother because Ubuntu is not my primary OS. In general my experience with both OSes are like this. While Ubuntu works it just doesn't feel up to the same level as Vista. |

#12: Oh, that's right. Unlike every other empire & monopoly in history, Microsoft's will last forever. Pax Imperia! Ubuntu smokes Vista when it comes to copying & deleting files, that's for sure. File moving with overwrite is still broken in SP1.

The Microsoft PC hegemony will certainly not last forever. Still, Linux without a true business model is almost certainly doomed. If I were willing to wager on Linux or Windows future, I would come down on the side of Windows every time. Care to disagree? |

Are you talking in terms of monetary success or longevity? Windows is tied to one entity; you kill Microsoft and Windows goes with it. Linux uses a distributed model where no one company owns or controls Linux. Because of this, I do believe that the only thing that can kill Linux is the decision of users to not use it until it dies of stagnation. However, it is getting better and better, and is being used more & more. If I was Ballmer, I'd be crapping my pants at night worrying about market share lost to Linux over time. |
